This is exactly why the death penalty is a bad thing...

Should this turn out to be true (and I hope it is), I can only reiterate my post about the torture and mental health implications of repeated exposure to what amounts to mock execution.

The daft thing is that prisoners on death row get counselling for this kind of thing!

If the State didn't subject them to it, they wouldn't have to treat them for it.

The death penalty is a bad thing because sooner or later an innocent person will be convicted and killed then a reprieve won't count for much.

Amnesty's Twitter is contradicting itself from pillar to post. Now repeating there's on stay just a delay. I wish they'd verify these things before constantly posting nonsense in an attempt to be 'current'. It's hardly a football score...

This will be the fourth stay of execution if so, poor bloke. Seems he is in good spirits regardless, as his pastor says he, Troy Davis, actually encourages him.
Still watching the live stream on Democracy now.

Reprieve (not a stay) seems to be confirmed.

BTW The white supremacist gang-member who dragged James Byrd Jnr to death behind his pick-up-truck 13 years ago was executed in Texas about 23 minutes ago. While I still disagree with the death penalty I'd be lying if I said I was concerned about this as Troy Davis. However the point remains that as long as there's capital punishment available we'll potentially have as many Troy Davis' as Shawn Berrys, Lawrence Brewers, and John Kings.

I don't think it's confirmed yet is it.

They've probably done it just so they can execute him at a random time and stave off the press.

He will not die tonight. According to Democracy Now the supreme court has handed down a reprieve of 1-7 days while they consider the plea.

More on ABC News.

They do say that 'The Supreme Court could decide at any time tonight or in the next seven days whether to go through with his execution, according to local TV station 11Alive.' If it's decided tonight I wonder how soon he'd be executed?

Blimey, the black preacher types they're interviewing are quite dramatic aren't they - "they gonna put the MURDER JUICE in his arms".

In this instance I can't help but feel they're being factually correct rather than dramatic per se. Drama, to me, indicates a level of exaggeration or theatricals for the sake of attention. Execution of a potentially innocent man is rather above that. I do know what you're saying though.

Other than that, what the guy said was fairly reasonable. However, the 'murder juice' thing made him sound like a bit of loon! :p

Just read what that fella and his mates did to that poor man. Beyond horrific.

Absolutely ZERO sympathy for him.

what was this guy's character like?

has he killed people in the past? drug dealer? drug user? rapist? gang banger?

job? family? house?

i only ask because you guys are making out like this guy was a saint and i havn't read anything about the case.

Best to read up tbh. In a nutshell an off-duty cop playing good Samaritan was shot and killed in 1989. Nine witnesses said the guy now on death row was the killer, even though no gun was found. To date, seven of the nine witnesses have come forward to recant their statements saying they were made under duress from the police (eg 'Finger the guy or we'll prosecute YOU for the murder instead').

There's a question mark over whether the ballistics evidence was fabricated also, and the guy maintains his innocence. In fact one of the guys who originally pointed the finger (Cole) seems to be a potential suspect out to save his own skin. He admitted owning a .38 handgun (as used in the killing) but said he'd 'given it away' earlier that night...

Unfortunately he seems to have been an ordinary guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. At any rate not what you'd call a 'safe' execution by any means.

Indeed it's not a safe execution, but I did spot this -

In July 1988, Davis pled guilty to carrying a concealed weapon; he was fined $250 as part of a plea agreement in which a charge of possession of a gun with altered serial numbers was dropped.

That's not quite what I would call an ordinary thing to do.
