Crucial M4 Purchasing Questions

Hi Guys,

Im going to purchase a 128/256GB Crucial M4 tonight. got a few questions

Whats the best way to check the firmware version?
(i was gunna update before windows install)

anyone know if overclockers are shipping Firmware 0009?
(not neccsary but saves me checking) :)

What should i setup or remove For SSD to the best it can be?
Plan is:
Its going to run on a Intel Chipset (supposed to be good?)
Remove Pagefile
Turn on AHCI.

is there anything else i should be doing?
 
Hello

1, Firmware version is on the rear of the drive.

2, We have mixed stock and this cannot be checked due to sealed boxes.

3, Enable ACHI, install OS (on intel sata 6GB/s port).

4, When in windows you can update firmware (nice and easy from HERE). This is none destructive so your OS remains intact :)

Turn the page file off if you want to, 8-16GB of ram is where I personally look to turn it off however windows errors do not record unless there is atleast 800MB of page file.

That should about do you :)
 
btw i forgot to ask the main question!

i have a Image of my current Windows install, can i put the image right on the SSD with negative effects or is it best to do a fresh install?

You can with the correct tools but only if your current OS is installed on the SATA set to AHCI in the bios if your looking tio set it to AHCI.

Personally I would back up and do a fresh install. 99% of the time this is the way forward! :)

well the imagine is a fresh install with just windows updates but if you suggest fresh thats what ill do.
 
The way I understand it, if you image your pc whilst using a mechancal hdd and restore it on to the ssd, windows has not calibrated its self which happens during the install of windows 7, for an ssd.

So effectively, you may not get trim etc etc etc if you image and restore from a mechanical hdd.
 
Hijacking this thread a little. I already bought a Crucial M4 to replace the stock hard drive in my Macbook Pro. Love it. 250/mbs write and 500 write.

I'm considering replacing my old Samsung SSD in my Windows PC with a Crucial M4 too. But my motherboard's SATA ports are only 3gb/s. Will this mean I wont be able to achieve performance similar to the above numbers?

Thats correct however SATA 6Gb/s ports are getting to a very good price point value now so its not the end of the world :)
