Depression and suicide
In November 2007, the FDA announced it had received post-marketing reports that patients using varenicline for smoking cessation had experienced several serious symptoms, including suicidal ideation and occasional suicidal behavior, erratic behavior, and drowsiness. On February 1, 2008 the FDA issued an alert to further clarify its findings, noting that "it appears increasingly likely that there is an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms." It is unknown whether the psychiatric symptoms are related to the drug or to nicotine withdrawal symptoms, although not all patients had stopped smoking. The FDA also recommended that health care professionals and patients watch for behavioral and mood changes.[13] In May 2008, Pfizer updated the safety information associated with varenicline, noting that "some patients have reported changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions." [14]
As of July 1, 2009, the US Food and Drug Administration requires Chantix (varenicline) to carry a black box warning, the agency's strongest safety warning, due to public reports of side effects including depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal actions.[15]

no i quit smoking with will power years ago, you dont need anythng else
I've never understood the appeal of smoking. Paying to smell like crap and kill yourself, no thanks.
Tobacco is a drug just like most others, you feel good whilst ingesting even knowing it does your long term health harm.
Six months ago I, and my GF, decided to stop smoking. I had been a smoker since I was 14 years old and I am now 36 so 22 years of smoking meant i thought that it would be very hard to give up. I decided that I would just stop, no cutting down or patches gums or sprays. My GF said that she was going to ween herself off smoking by just cutting down. I had a tough time for about 2 weeks with cravings but since then I have been fine and now I never think about smoking. My GF, on the other hand, is still smoking as she just couldn't 'get the monkey off her back'.
My advice is to just stop - go through 'cold turkey' - be a none smoker. My sister also tried champix which did put her off smoking but she still smoked while she was on it and now realises she didn't want to give up smoking and just thought champix was some wonderdrug that will make you forget tobacco even exists. The bottom line is - you have to really want to quit, and when the cravings get bad not to give in.
