Losing Weight

Wow, I'd just be so grumpy from being starving all the time.

I'm only hungry about an hour from Lunch.

Ridiculous, that's not even a "diet" it's starving yourself. You're probably skinnyfat and look awful.

5'11" 78KG athletic build. Until this job always in physical work and always down the gym. Not as cut as i used to be but still look good.

You're doing more harm than good by doing that. As much as you may think it's healthy, it just isn't. I wouldn't be surprised if some of your teeth fall out or something from lack of nutrition.

Utter rubbish. Six million years of evolution where eating every day wasn't a sure thing, let alone eating more than once a day. Studies even indicate that eating every other day may be the healthiest way to live as it's probably the closest thing to what we're used to.

I haven't had a day off from work sick in over 15 years, i'm not even registered at a doctors and i'm always as healthy as a horse. I wonder how many here can say that?

My calorie expenditure is ~1650 per day, so one meal and plenty of coffee with sugar in meets my quota.

I'm in a similar situation. I was 16 stone 10 a couple of weeks ago. Have been doing weight watchers online since then and have already lost 8 pounds. Going to start cycling soon and revive my old hobby of hill walking. Cutting down on portion size, cutting out takeaways and fizzy juice and drinking loads of water seems to do wonders.

Would love to go hill walking as part of a exercise routine or for hobby but I don't live near any, the pentland hills are seven/eight miles away and I don't have a car :(

**** cardio, join a gym and start lifting heavy weights, it's more fun.
Don't eat many carbs, eat protein and fat.
Alternatively, get liposuction.

Used to weigh: 18st 7lb+
Weigh now: 13st 10lb

Lost most of the weight on the cambridge diet, got fed up around 15st 7lb and gymmed it to where I am now. Had a few ups and downs.. went to 15st 7lb again not too long ago but got it back down again. Happened when I wasn't working and just gave up really!

Some key things to remember when on a diet:
  • Eat little and often, 4-6 times a day.
  • Eat when you start your day, get your metabolism going don't try hold it as long as possible
  • Don't eat more than 1500calories a day
  • Drink plenty of water (4-8pints) just don't drink water too much at a time (water intoxication and all that, I feel 8pints is the limit for me) - bare in mind that the nhs recommend everyone should be drinking 2litres (around 4 pints a day) anyway
  • Drinking water/non calorie liquids helps process carbs/calories and it really does work.
  • To lose 1lb a week youd have to cut out 3500 calories a week, meaning 7000calories for 2lb a week. I find 1500 calories a day is perfect for me for 2lb a week.
  • Saturated fats are the devil, keep them low as possible, cheese is a big offender here as is chocolate
  • It only takes one large mcdonalds meal a week to ruin 50%+ of your hard work! You'd be amazed at what foods in small quantities add up quickly

Its pretty much impossible if you stick to a diet to not lose weight unless you're very close to your ideal weight. Often you'll find that as fatcells are used up, they actually retain water/toxins/other for a period of time which is a reason for not showing a loss sometimes. Be patient, its a good idea to measure key parts of your body (penis LOLOL) and do this the same time you weigh yourself.. if you see now weight loss, you'll likely see inches lost.

Oh and if you're a woman and have the painters in, you hold additional water during this time.

I spent a lot of time on the cambridge forums which has more female posters than male so you often learn things without realising :P

As for running, find a "Couch to 5k program" - they're usually pretty good and its quite a slow build up which is helpful. From someone who couldnt run at all, to someone who can.. they work!

Not too long ago I was doing about 5k a day followed by some rowing and then a sauna and steam room.

I felt so much better... this was ruined by a holiday and being generally lazy. I still go to the gym about 3 times a week but feel nowhere near as healthy

I really need to start eating less and doing more exercise. (I still eat healthy, just a lot of it)

Heh, guest2 everyone I know that runs always says that they feel amazing the next day like they're on some kind of high and I have to agree.. you feel like you've got loads of energy.

Just been 'off' for a week really due to my mates navy passing out parade.. first day running was on monday and I got cramp straight away in my left calf.. I really didnt want to take a break but missing his parade was not an option (known the bugger for 19years!) I blame the alcohol and as a result I'm sworn off it until I'm at my target weight.. thank god anniversarys and major birthdays are out the way, I feel my next drink will actually be christmas (my birthday to :P)

I am the same height as you, and I went from 330lb in July 2009 to 175lb in November 2010. As this is GD, I am not going to offer any useful advice :D

I used to weigh 16 stone too, am just over 6ft tall.

I now weigh just over 13, but did get down to 11.8 stone, but i looked too skinny so i bulked up a bit.

Ideal for me is 12.5 but I am getting over an injury.

The way i did it, stop looking for ways to lose weight, stop looking at diets, fads etc and just get excercising!! you will struggle at first if you are unfit, but you will improve you just need keep up the positive attitude.

Don't weigh yourself each day, once a month to see change, plot it in a graph and it will be all the motivation you need.

driving a short distance? walk or cycle!

fancy a chocolate bar? DONT FATTY
Fancy a burger? DONT FATTY

I now feel so much better, sex life is better and i look so much more attractive.

Not true, having one McDonalds a week will do nothing if you are eating healthy and exercising, calories in vs calories out!

A guy on youtube is doing a program of getting half his calories from ICE CREAM

Its not great food but its not as evil as everyone makes out, no harm in having a cheeky cheat meal

I mean more ontop of what you normally have, a lot of people think when they diet it entitles them to naughtys every week and usually have it ontop of their normal diet.. and yeah actually you're right I'm exaggerating quite a bit going by this calculator I just found this, seems new to the website.. not that I'm on it often lol.. dont think I've come across it before:

Its the saturated fats that are the murderer of diets in the food, that and the salt content. In the army booklet I have it says not to exceed more than 6g of salt a day (at least I think thats the book I have that says it)

I also read something along the lines of your body only being able to properly handle 500ish calories at a time, anything else isn't processed efficiently but I have no sources on that, along with everyone is different so its hard to prove but I think over 1k is definately excessive in one meal!

Alternatively to dieting, you could stay at the same intake but just burn 500-1000calories every day.. I know which is easier for me... not eating haha! :D

A retired prison guard in the US has eaten his 25,000th Big Mac.

By your logic he should be dead or obese? As you say everybody is different, if you are putting on weight or not losing it, you are doing something wrong and need to try something else.

Nothing wrong with saturated fats.

True, it gets a bad rap, your body needs the right fats and the right amount of it

Nothing wrong with little amounts but bad in bigger amounts.

For example, in one standard sized mars bar.. there is 30% of your recommended daily amount of saturated fat in. Have that mcdonalds meal and a mars bar and you're left with about 6% thats recommended for you

In 1/10th of a cake there is 4.6g of saturated fats, meaning 46g of saturated fat in the entire cake meaning over 200% of your RDA. Those cakes arent big either!

Some people just don't realise whats in certain foods!

I'm proof of that :(

That guy buys 6 on a monday, 8 on a thursday making 14, divided by days of the week is 2 a day.. saturated fat in a big mac is 45% of your rda? I saw the supersize me program I'm pretty sure thats all he eats everyday, very rarely has the fries iirc but he has the lettuce/greens left in which reduces cholesterol.. without a full diet itinery youd never know if he was taking in more sat fats than he needed but going on the maths we have he's fine ;)

Edit again:

Going by the maths from the article, he's been eating big macs for 39 years.. he's eaten 25000, which works out at 1.7 big macs a day on average.. not to be pedantic or anything!

Except people on the Atkins diet tend to eat quite large amounts of saturated fats and yet studies have shown that people following the Atkins or other low carb diets have better blood cholesterol levels.

My diet is very simple and keeps me trip, despite a sedentary lifestyle. I eat once a day. That's it, nice and simple.

Normally around noon, could be a salad one day, sandwich the next, or a roast dinner. Whatever really.

Wow, you need to change your diet fast or face early death
