Gears of War 3 Dated (Official blah blah)

Odd, I've just been playing Beast for the past hour. Took about 2 minutes to get going but I had four different matchmaking sessions / games.

The Retro Lancer defiantly has it's place in the Campaign mode, especially with Lambent Humans.

I've found the Lancer is best for normal locust, the HammerBurst for lambent and the Retro for the Lambent humans(tip - you can bayonett charge through a load of them;)).

*** Potential spoilers ***

Just finished the campaign on co-op with a mate, on hardcore in around 10 hours picking up 52% of achievements. To be honest, I'm glad the story has concluded but I'm left feeling like something is missing. I waited two years for this, and now I feel like I've been a bit cheated. GoW3 is definitely all about the multiplayer, but the story needed to be concluded and I feel they've let themselves down with how they've gone about it.

It felt like it was really missing the guts, and feeling of desperation that GoW2 had. This was supposed to be mankind's last stand and it felt like it was mankind's "minor tattle" all the way through. At no point did I think "oh that's not good" or "how are they going to get out of this one?" I dunno, it was enjoyable but I really feel that for all the hype and showcasing this has had they really didn't live up to it with the campaign.

Anyway, good stuff - the new enemies, modes and weapons are pretty much spot on. Graphically, it's impressive and a step on from GoW2. Just as GoW2 was a massive step on from GoW1. They've got that right for sure.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to banging it on insane and playing through co-op with 3 mates later on next week. Then ploughing into horde in a big way, oh and getting the achievements up to a decent level.

In summary, story good, co-op great but as Demoniser said - overall not awesome. I think the multiplayer will have to pick up that challenge.

I agree with much of what you said. I felt disappointed with 3. For me 2's campaign was better. I preferred the levels, the games atmosphere and the journey of it all. 3 is graphically superior but atmospherically infereior imo. At least 3 has solid multiplayer, horde and beast mode to compensate. I actually think many of the multiplayer maps were better in G2 too.

Am looking forward to what the DLC brings though!

I'm sorry I keep asking these questions (especially as no-one seems to know, lol) but what levels do the Horde fortification upgrades max out at? Highest I'm at so far is level 7 on the fences and the blue bar is still going up.

Unsure mate, Im trying to lvl the silverback >< gets expensive.
Just finished another horde so off to bed, sick of morons that just build a turret and sit in them waiting.

32 I think is highest so far :( people just dont stay long enough

SPOILERS!!

I wanted to know more about Myrrah. Clearly human. Clearly knew Adam Fenix from before E-day. Even Baird makes a comment t'wards end of the game saying something along the lines of "Is she just some human person gone down there for holiday camp" or sommat daft. Yet it doesn't go to any efforts to explain why Myrrah, being a human, is queen of the Locust!

:sad face:

Oh man. We would never get on.

Isn't that the whole point of the game - to stay in your base, build the fortifications and twonk them as they come to you? I get fed up with folks that lay down spikes, run off to the other side of the map to attack and then end up getting killed. I build my turret and use it so that when you repair it, the level goes up. I'll soon be able to get a troika.

I played a game - just three of us - last night with my tactic and we got to 32 or so before I had to quit and go to bed.

No idea, I want auto turrets!

I'm equally as sick of the ****s that run away from your base and get downed and expect you to leave the safe house to come and pick them up again. While leaving the safer area to come rescue their dumb ***** the locust eat away at all you have built.

So for the last time Wyrdo, **** you, stay down don't get up. :D

And that is what the prequel games will clear up. This story is the Marcus Fenix story.

Well Act 1 felt like I was on rails, those exploding guys were annoying so glad theyve gone for now

It's all like that tbh, the worst gears SP. Nothing like G2 when you walk into the labs and the tubes start breaking. No jaw dropping moments tbh.

First couple of chapters of ACT3 are the only above average bits. They are the only bits where you feel humanity is making it's last stand.

The trouble with them talking about a prequel is the weapons can only be worse.

I'd have thought the weapons would be more or less the same in a prequel?

If it's set years before, then the COG would have access to all of their arsenal at least to start with.

The 'Marcus Fenix' story didn't really grab me, the characters are to cliched for me to really care.

SPOILERS

i had to smirk at the ending sequence, Marcus Fenix never changes his expression does he. Also after being spoilt by the Uncharted games , and their use of full motion capture for acting i was a bit unimpressed by gears efforts. It wasn't bad by anymeans, just not excellent, which is kind of the vibe for everything in the game (minus the gameplay).

Maybe it's just 'cause I love the whole 80s action hero thing, but I love the characters in the Gears universe. Hell, I'm disappointed if someone doesn't have biceps bigger than their head!

P.S. Clayton Carmine is the first awesome Carmine for this very reason!

No because they say the retro lancer was pre locust. So anything set before then would have the retro lancer only.

I think I've maxed out the sentry gun at level 6. The blue bar has gone and is now replaced by 4 stars.

When do you get auto turrets?

When do you get auto turrets?

I can't remember come to think of it. I know it was locked and suddenly it appeared after a few games. I don't know whether it's to do with your overall level in the multiplayer or whether you have to unlock a couple of levels on the existing Horde items like fences and decoys.
