Money

I spend money if I need or want something but will never, ever spend it for the sake of it and will never blow it on anything less than the best deal I can find. I also like to have a suitable amount built up at all times because you never know what the future might hold and what opportunities you could miss because your life is full of material items you didnt really want or you've spent it all on booze and your savings balance is nil.

I've found that the more money I earn, the less I want to spend. 25 now and earning near enough double what I did 5 years ago, but most of it goes into savings. I guess it's partly down to growing up too and having a different attitude towards money. I care much more about what I spend it on now whereas I wouldn't think twice about dropping £100 on an evening out, now the thought of that horrifies me. Getting old :(

This. And I am 16, 17 next month ;)

I don't come from a rich family, and didn't work last summer (never worked :P), and I got a bit more than 4k in the bank, and trust me, I only want to see it go UP!

Personally, I want to buy, a new desk chair, 2 new 22 inch TVs, Astro Mixamp, new PC setup (as what I have is SO bad), some 7 PS3 games, new desk, capture card.....

Pretty much it.

What I will probably buy (out of those) in the next year:
2 games.
MAYBE a TV (but I doubt it).

May I add, I don't smoke or drink, and those are stuff I just thought I want now, so there are obviously more. I can't justify spending 100+ euros on a chair, or 1.5k on a beast setup.

I do plan on getting a job next year, and all the money goes for stuff I want (stuff mentioned above) so I won't touch my savings.

I managed to pull it around and stop the mindless spending, i read some research into the subject and the reason they pinned to this sort of spending habbit is the person felt they didn't disserve the money so want to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

I don't think its that, I work hard for my living but I love that I can make other people happy just by doing something they never expected would happen.

I don't mind spending money, but I hate wasting it. I always thoroughly research any major purchase (even smaller purchases are sometimes subject to extensive research!), I'd never just walk into an electronics store and by the first TV/laptop etc I liked the look of. I urge on the side of caution I guess.

I also hate not having spare cash, as Fox says you never know when you may need it for something important. Living right on the edge would scare me personally.

Atm I'm in a lucky situation of living at home and earning a good wage so I can spend a fair bit going out, seeing mates and buying stuff whilst also saving a decent amount. That's all about to change though, moving out soon!

When I buy things I'm the same I'll look around and make sure I'm not spending too much etch, but going out and spending money I just dont care.

Can absolutely relate to this.

A great example was that when I was 16 I happily shelled out something ridiculous like £300 for a GeForce3 Ti500 I think it was. Yet recently, except for when I went for a GTX570, I've found it hard to justify spending any more than about 200 quid on video cards despite being in a considerably better position than I was when I was 16! 300 quid was a months wages!

Same.

I think age puts things into perspective. When you're 16 and into gaming the need for the newest gfx card seems like a big deal. You also tend to have fewer hobbies and have less outgoings so it seems acceptable to spend that much on a gfx card.

When you get older it just doesn't seem worth it, you put limits on what you'd pay for things because you're not that bothered about them being the best money can buy. Unless we're talking about specific hobbies you really enjoy, that's a bit different.

You specifically talking about going out and spending money on nights out?

I'm a bit like that, much more willing to splash cash when on nights out (although I'd never get into debt over it). Maybe it's the booze :p

Like I said not just nights out. I'm paying for 5 or 6 people to go on a friends stag do (I'm best man) because I know otherwise they would struggleto go, that will see me about 2k down in all but it wouldn't be a stag do with out them as the stag has decided to get married in vegas so no chance of them going there.

Also alx saying how ur in Aberdeen now (or soon) you'll probably see what I'm like in person since me and -Ad- go out quite a bit lol

I bought a gayly expensive gfx card once, and a case with 12 fans and an abit mobo from OcUK back in 2001. It was crazy, although I had the money and still do, common sense tells me that a decent laptop and an xbox easily covers that hobby without too much difficulty. So glad I dont waste money like that on pointless IT hardware now, lol.

Also, prizes for anyone who can remember the card I'm talking about. It was 2001/2, a GeForce Ti something with two fans on it. Pretty much the best card you could buy at the time, I just can't remeber the exact model

I've got a couple of mates up in Aberdeen, been out a few times :D.

Yeah, Barrow is a bit of a hole to say the least but I guess it's only 4 weeks doing a bit of onsite work so I'll just have to suck it up :p

You remind me of 'Topper' from Dilbert. Always reminding everyone you are better, be it through telling us you spent £20k on IT kit or the constant references to First Class air and rail travel :p

Project engineers in oil & gas seem to earn a relative fortune if they're good.....

And he earns less than you ;)

No I'm staff, I'm in this for the long run, I want to be running the company sooner or later.

From where i am its > Senior > Principle > Manager > Director.

Should be chartered and senior this year :) then just steps up. Project engineers find it hard to move to senior roles.

I wouldnt spend that sort of money on my friends. Im not tight, but Im not that generous. Ive never been a borrower or a lender except in the most dire circumstances.
I always look for the best deals, but I have been know to make a lot of impulse purchases.
