I sometimes read or hear that prison life is easy. You know, stories of inmates (regardless of the severity of the crime) receiving an education, nice living standards, entertainment, etc etc.

I just wanted to know whether or not this is some sort of myth made up by newspapers and other media sources?

Anyone here ever worked in a prison?

I believe MrMoonX is a prison officer.

I do think the hype about "nice living standards" is usually just sensationalist headlines by the Daily Fail et al to whip up the middle classes into indignant fury.

(btw it's 'etc')

I've never done any time but I have mates that have, Mate just got out of a 2 yr stretch, In the last year he had a PS2, TV, Radio... I think the Radio should be sufficient on its own.

Try an experiment: lock yourself in a room for 23 hours a day with just a radio and see if you're still sane by the end of the week.

Things like that aren't just provided willy-nilly for every prisoner, they are given as incentives for good behaviour, and even then you aren't just given them, you actually have to 'earn' money to 'buy' them through prison jobs, at least that's how it worked 15 years a go.

No, because I abide by a thing called the law, so my freedom's and liberties remain intact. And one could only dream of the scum being locked up for 23 hours a day, it's more like they're locked up for a few hours when they go to sleep at night.

I'm of the opinion if you're in prison you shouldn't be allowed any contact with the outside world personally.

And how have you come to that conclusion? The Daily Mail? Again unless things have drastically changed, the only times you were allowed out of your cell was to collect your 'food' (if that's what you can call it) and during 'association' for a couple of hours every day. The rest of the time was spent locked in your cell, unless you have a prison job or are on an education course.

And the only contact with the outside world was during a visit, which was only once a fortnight anyway.

Trust me, prisons are massively far away from being the holiday camps that the Daily Mail paint them to be.

Yup prison is just like a hotel, you sleep there on the nights and have breakfast in the mornings and the rest of the day you are free to rape and pillage the locals.

I did some construction work in HMP Dartmoor for around 18 months and did plastering in over 80 cells and was in direct contact with prisoners, took a while to get used to.

I worked in two wings which included sex offenders and high risk prisoners(Wasnt very nice working in that wing),from what ive seen yes prison life is easy.

Playstaions,TVs in there cells, keys to open there individual cells.

Prisoners get to choose what meals they want to eat a day in advance from quite a big list, some of the food was quite nice ranging from most things we eat outside of prison,my opinion they shouldnt get a choice at all apart from if they have food allergies.

Not really a lot of restrictions from what ive seen, prisoners were allowed to roam freely and do what they like to certain extend of course. Dartmoor is Cat C mind,if it was A or B i guess the restrictions would be worse.

I watched a program about the security arrangements around prisoners at visiting time a year or so ago. There was lots of CCTV with visiting mothers giving their kids packets of heroin to slip to daddy when they ran up to hug him and things of that nature. It was endemic with phones being put up vag's and retrieved during the heavy petting sessions that were allowed etc. The Guvnor stood there and said something along the lines of he didn't permit body searches of visitors even when they had already been caught with drugs, so they just had to do the best they could. I thought poxy liberal - he's lost the war before he's even started.

American style seperation during visits would at least cut down the huge amount of phones and drugs pouring into our prisons, but that probably would be against the little darlings 'yooman rites'.

spent some time in Strangways back in the 80's just before the riots.

Someone mentioned it kills your character inside.. depending what type of person you are that spot on.

I was one of 3 in cell, made for one, 23 hour lock up, crap in a bucket or paper and slop out, as for entertainment it was a game of who could get your shaving brush nearest to the victorian cell door. Not good times.

Certainly made an impression on me, never went back inside again anyway.

Not sure what it's like now a days but its the physcological hardness of it rather than the physical hardness thats hard I would think. Just the loss of liberty and freedom is a killer..
