Losing Weight

I do have a question though to anyone who knows a bit about nutrition, nuts and seeds are meant to be healthy even though they contain fats, but if I have them as a daily snack would that potentially be just as bad in the long term for weight loss as snacking on sugar or carb rich foods?

Fats are not only good for you but necessary for the body to function properly, the only way nuts could be bad for weight loss is if you ate enough to put you at a calorie surplus.

I was similar to yourself and started running and just eating slightly smaller portions of home cooked food (no microwave meals etc). I started with couch to 5k program for the running and the weight fell off. I'm now 163lbs and run about 12km every other day which keeps the weight off and I just eat sensibly. That's what I'd suggest to you as it worked well for me.

Many people as they get older do find that they start putting on the beef even though their diets whilst not great aren't that bad either. Within the last few months I've started doing a mixture of cardio and weights for 1 hour every second day. I've dropped over one dress size already and I'm still seeing changes. I haven't really looked at my diet too much yet, I still have stuff that I shouldn't have on a Friday evening. Though my diet isn't great, it isn't terrible but there are still changes to be made.

I'm taking it slowly making the changes, I know if I do it this way I'll stick to it and it will be a lasting change. Going to extremes wouldn't work and it wouldn't last. As many people have already said, there is no great secret to it. Exercise more, eat healthier and you will see changes :) (Oh and OP, I am older than you. If I can do it so can you!)

Good, makes walking a lot more bearable if you're a non-smoker.

TBH I've been a little depressed over the past couple of days and have found myself snacking / eating really large meals

If you're in a similar boat start drinking lots of water - you'll find your head clearing straight away :) Then get out there and walk... leave the car at home

Rubbish, I can run (furthest I've ever done was around 14 miles) and I smoke 10-15 a day. Though I ain't saying if I stopped I wouldn't be any fitter as I most likely would.

Firstly, the food...To loose weight you know what you have to do...classic burn more calories than you eat. Have smaller meals, but eat more frequently to increase metabolism, and eat less calories. Cut starchy and fatty foods and definately take-away, but treat yourself once a week. i.e. eat 5 times a day, but healthy stuff, e.g. 8am scrambled egg and beans (cut the toast), 10am apple and bannana, 1pm grilled chicken and veg, 4pm yoghurt and pair with strawberries, 6pm light dinner.

Motivation comes from enjoyment. You want to loose weight through exercise, do what you enjoy. For example, walking is good, if you can't motivated to walk go somewhere so you have an objective. Running is good (be careful of knee damage), if you can't get motivated to run, but like football, play football - even if its by yourself in your yard/garden...kicking a ball against a wall.

For me, I hate exercise but love martial arts, so do kickboxing and aikido. My food is a problem though...love chinese!:D

Well I've never been overweight, and when my weight did reach the upper range of what it should be (12 st max for me too, most my weight went up was 11.5 stone), I simply lost it back down to 11 stone.

My secret? Dont need to lift a finger, exercise is completely optional but doesnt work too well for me, all I need to do is simply STOP EATING ALL THE DARN CAKES!!!

I stop eating cakes = weight goes away :)

But I have a superspeed metabolism, both fat and muscle tissue burn away really really fast if I simply stop eating junk food, or stop doing exercise. All I need to do to stay healthy is stay away from saturated fats, fried foods, and anything else with high cholesterol (I have a complete ban on deep fried food and red meats, and I need to be very careful with my cake addiction).

Don't make the mistake of starving yourself, as your body will adjust and try to store as much fat from the food you do eat.

It's not always a bad idea. I've been eating alternate days for over a month now (google alternate day fasting), and I've lost over a stone.

The way I've been doing it is having breakfast, lunch on day one, evening meal on day two; breakfast & lunch on day 3, evening meal on day four, etc.

For me it's working well.

Frequency of meals has no affect on metabolism.

Saturated fats or dietary cholesterol aren't bad for you.

I'm 26, 10 stone, can't put weight on and eat crap all day and I have been for the last 10 years. You sound the totally other way around from me. Just exercise more eat healthy.

You are not eating enough to put on weight. So many people that say this kind of thing are of the belief that they have a "super fast metabolism" when, in fact, they simply are not eating enough to put on weight.

What is a normal daily diet for you?

Not exactly. I know people who are fat and don't eat much and vice versa......

What you see on the outside of a person may not equate to what is happening on their insides.
