Plug socket switch - Turning itself on...?

Right,
I am asking this on behalf of Rachel in my office.

She has a double wall socket at home, which is reasonably new (about 15 years) which appears to be switching itself on...

It seems to happen on both of the switches on the socket.

Now the question is:- could there be any electrical/technical reason for this? Or does she need to take up our suggestion and get a priest in?

A couple of mine do this too. For some stupid reason they appear to be spring-loaded. to switch them off, I have to hold the switch down but sometimes without much luck - it just springs back on.

God knows why they're designed like that

You should go and check her socket:p
 
Dave, I had the opposite problem last year - a spring loaded light switch that would spring to off position. It meant that you had to hold the switch to on position and gaffer tape it down for it to stay on. It was basically time for a new switch and its replacement worked fine. Faulty switch was 18 years old. Prolly means a new one for Rachel.

Sounds like a screwed socket. easiy job to replace tradesman should beable to pick up a kne 2 way switched socket for £3+ tbh, 5 minute job including isolation tbh.

I may be partial to using mister winky :p

Switches should remain off unless switched on. Not 'Hello, I'm on a again' as your bouncing off the wall from the shock. Surely common sense?

How about working on a engine, and the car decides to start itself. "Just thought I'd say 'Hyia!'" as the spanner smacks itself into your forehead
 
4 year thread revival!

We have a plug socket that turns itself off. Also the fridge decided to turn itself up to max the other day and ruin all my salad and veg as it froze everything. The fridge is not plugged into the same socket but I imagine into the same circuit

God damn electric gnomes
