i'd take that car back thats absolutley rubbish, me and my dad both have mondeo tdci's his is a taxi and does 48 mpg mostly town driving and stop start, i did a 400 mile trip at weekend in mine speedo didn't go below 90 and i was getting 49 mpg, if i drive mine reasonably normal on mixed roads i can see 52 mpg on the average trip

The trip computer rarely has reason to be accurate either.
Depends how you drive it i suppose. When i first got the 1.5dci clio i thought the milage was rubbish and wouldnt believe a lad in the same office was getting a lot more. I was getting around 50mpg he was claiming 70mpg. I went for a few drives with him and he drove like an old granny, never getting above 2000rpm and sticking to 60-70mph on the m'way.
The commute for me is pretty much all m'way for 27 miles. Last few tanks have been showing 64.8, 68.2 and 66.5mpg for the full tank (it only takes one mad dash at 85+ to destroy the figures though). Best has been 71.8mpg on the clock for a full tank (showed 719 miles on trip meter), going to Gatwick and back from Leeds at a steady 55-60 in the very early hours both ways, which was very close to the actual pump figure when refilling (took 47 litres to brim having been brimmed before the start of the trip). /edit. Before anyone says that's not the right distance there were another couple of full m'way trips in there too!
Have tried to see what figures it will do, and going from work to home, resetting the computer when i got up to 50mph on the m'way to getting off at the other end was high 80's when there was no other traffic about, but again, you only need to stop/start once for that figure to drop.

So this car is just as fast as a Ferrari, yet does 88mpg? Why would anyone buy a Ferrari?
I think his point is "70mph is the speed limit so you never need a car to go faster" blah blah ****ing blah.

Not sure what it got to do with fuel economy. But it is funny when someone says, "He drove like an old granny, keeping to 60-70mph on a motorway". That's is the speed you are meant to keep to!

no one is stupid, no one buys a rio expecting to get 88 but the car will do similar numbers in the real world.

If this is true then it seems likely the car will do 80+mpg.
Noticed the year was 2009, so maybe the manufacturers have cottoned on to this and started lying to out compete each other. Or maybe the people at fifth gear were lying? Or maybe you guys drive uneconomically?

I love all these people who go on about mega mpg and cheap tax. LOL If you got the money enjoy a good sized engine car while you can. If life that bad you need a 88 or more car. AND your not 17. you need to look at sorting your spending issue's elsewhere.
