Unemployment thread

You place the bets before you know what cards you have.

Thats what happens in casinos for blackjack? You place your maximum bet before you receive your 1st 2 cards?

Or you can place more once turned over 2 cards?

So you are trying to guess by statistics the likelihood that you have good cards this round? And how can you possibly do this?

(i know i will read wiki, just asking)

wait so this is as simple as making big bets when you have good cards and not making bets when you have rubbish cards?

I dont see whats so abnormal about this strategy?

No, no... Its essentially about remembering which cards have already been and the likelihood of a certain card coming up on this hand.

I think in essence its as "easy" as working out that more high cards have gone already leaving you with more chance of a lower card. If (for example) you were playing blackjack and had 17 then you may be more likely to bet due to this. It gets a lot more complex if you want to do it properly though as the statistics are a lot less rough.

ok but dont they shuffle pack every hand?

You mean after a round of blackjack the cards are dismissed and the pack is reduced.

Until no cards are left and then they start a new pack?

Also playing blackjack there are how many players per table? it varies?

I really don't know the specifics but I think a lot of casinos use a a few packs shuffled together and discard the cards after each hand. I thing (again very roughly) that it doesn't necessarily matter how many packs are used if you do it right.

Tbh I moved into halls and loved it (not the halls but being back to independence). I made a lot of close friends on the course as it was pretty intense and only a small class (25 of us), not sure what yours will be like though.

Most of the British students on the course for jobs through jobs advertised through the course (ie adverts sent to out course coordinator and forwarded to us) so I would recommend you apply for those, as is always said a lot of this sort of thing is as much about who you know as what you know! It might be totally different on your course though, mine was very industry focussed, designed to slot us into a specific industry so there was a lot of industry contact.

Im off to Birkbeck, part of the university of London, which will be a big change from Queens Belfast. Wont have to look after my self for a start in a slightly foreign place, should work out ok. The class I meet on friday too which will be fun.

Queens tried to do a similar thing with the job advert emails, at the time I didn't realise the importance and struggled badly with the travel back and forth to the mainland for almost anything. I hope they have the same thing this time round too though as they should be a good source of ideas for work by the looks of it.

What National Physics Award did you win at University, my brother is a physicist so it would be interesting to hear what it is and he might know of some options for you employment wise especially as there seems to be a shortage of mathematicians and physicists in the UK at the moment.
?

So there is actually a need for physicists and mathematicians for employment atm?

Perhaps I can get back into that? or not?

What kinda jobs/careers?

Postgrad is a whole different beast, its odd! My experience of it was that it really was like a proper job, ie full days (and more) in the department, seeing the undergrads as second class citizens and the postdocs seeing you as second class citizens (although I did get friendly with some of the undergrads...mostly women...). I went to a UOL college too, they have some weird ways of doing things due to this but its nice to be able to put a good uni on my CV.

Again my own experience with my course but definitely look at those job adverts if they come. Most of those companies sending emails idea of advertising vacancies was to send it to the half dozen universities course coordinators that they regarded highly. The job I got wasn't advertised outside my masters course at all in fact and the other one I had arranged an interview for doesn't seem to have advertised to the non academic circle either. You start to realise why there were no jobs when you were looking after finishing at undergrad!:p

Oh and when you do your project pick one that is industry focussed and based with a company (if your doing that type of course). I did with mine and it almost certainly helped me get that second interview. Several of my friends also worked in company offices and got paid nicely for it as well.

You place your bet before receiving any cards in blackjack, so you would need to know that you have a high probability of being dealt a premium hand against the dealer. As I am fairly sure in UK casinos you cannot increase your bet once cards have been dealt, except to split or double of course. Also UK casinos use either 2 decks or more, so good luck with that...

However, in life as it is I am more like Ali G lmao. Brain of Einsten, personality of Ali g.
If someone said that at a job interview I'd immediately think "He's a 'could have been'", one of those people who was perhaps not terrible at a subject in school but was lazy and never took it further. Even if you'd get 95%+ in every GCSE and A Level maths and physics exam that would only be equal to people at the top. At places like Oxbridge everyone doing maths and physics has that, A Levels cannot differentiate between such people. I know plenty of people who got almost perfect A Level and then almost failed their maths/physics degrees at Oxbridge.

Being good at A Levels makes you a big fish in a small pond. And unfortunately your lack of drive means you've never seen how far you could go but also never gotten a dose of life perspective.

Exploit the fact that you are clearly slightly retarded and get employment through equal opportunities.

well I also got 95% + for 1st year maths and physics at uni in exam results...however 1st year wasnt much more advacned than A levels. Well maths was more complex and new for sure however most off physics was just repeated.

Nonetheless id did get a 2.1 degree in the end with my laziness.

I am definately not a work orientated person. I am intelligent but little drive or motivation to work or suceed. I only care to have enough money to afford things I enjoy such as my pc/ps3 and my supermodel hookers (which are in fact quite costly so now I am motivated to get big paying job). And I am more interested in my personal enjoyment than work success or research.

I guess Im a hippy???? but even a hippy needs money so hence needs a job and I dont want a boring mundane job.

Ah, I have read about sending a follow up 'thank you' email, just unsure if it would be a help or a hindrance

no i read that's a good idea...only a thank you though. Anyway I dont know see what others say.

I thought you meant you hadn't heard back and were gonna email them something like

''hey its been 3 weeks since my interview and I haven't heard back. I was wondering if I was successful with interview and will you be in touch again''
