What would you do if you were in my shoes

You are in a good position in life - nothing tying you to a career path and options to travel. I would seriously think of doing some traveling - maybe go work in Australia, as it gets harder to do as you get older and have more commitments.

In the mean time give serous thought to what you wish to do in life. Most people fall into jobs to pay bills and before they know it, they have a lifestyle that makes radical change very difficult, meaning they have to work in a career path they do not like. Finding a career that you enjoy make everything seem easier.

I would look at apprenticeships and/or learn a trade. There is always demand for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc and they can pay very well too.




I quit the Sixth Form after the first year and went to college. Best thing I ever did.

That's fine if you make a definite switch, it's the quitting to nothing that confuses me. I done college instead of 6th form too, agree that I'm glad I did.

Join the forces.

That's not actually a bad idea... if the OP is interested in that. Plenty to do in the forces at the moment if you wan't some trigger time.

Hi guys

abit of history about me

I am currently 20 years old and Live in Devon, I live with my sister, her bf and their newly born baby.

last year I left college, I was studying Public Services foundation degree. I quit the course after 6 months as I was finding the course really hard and it just wasn't for me. Whilst I was there I was working at McdOnlad's, and still am.

I do enjoy my job and I don't. It pays my way. Just under £1000 a month. My outgoings only add up t0 £450 a month so I have abit left over.


I do want a new job but don't have a clue what in. I don't no what I am good at or enjoy. So finding it really hard. I also want to go traveling. The good thing about my job is that they will give me the time off to go traveling for say a month as they are really flexible.

So what would you do if you were in my shoes? I no its a hard one, but any suggestions would be much appreciated

Wasn't implying the Army is all about killing people.

I dropped out of my degree. I did Economics at A-level and really enjoyed it, however doing it at Uni was a real drag.

I quit, went temping doing admin work. Impressed enough to be put on a project which gave me enough experience to go out contracting doing said projects for other firms. Looking back I've been incredibly lucky.

Have you thought about trying something a bit more hands on? Have a look to see if there are any apprenticeships going locally. Always a reasonable amount of work in the trade for Electricians and plumbers.

Failing that, go travel for a bit, I missed out on the travelling and regret it now! Might help to clear you head, might even find some work you enjoy abroad

I hate being on tills at work

I was scared of talking to people in my teens as well. I also worked at McD's during A-levels... after 2 yrs they forced me on tills, it really wasn't bad and boosted my confidence and meant I didn't have to flip stinky burgers.

As for ways forward:

Plumbing, electrical, Gas, MOT Tester, Proper Mechanical engineer, join the forces?

Trust me it's not a good time to be in the forces. Massive cut backs. Massive job losses. Although I was in your shoes 9 years ago and it was the best decision I've ever made to sign up.

Yeah I'd be in that boat also. But I can understand Uni isn't for everyone.
