I was nagged into gettin a SSD by you guys :p

i got a Crucial M4 128GB running on Sata 2 on a Intel Controller
is this right?

so far my pc boots up slower than my raptor and feels no different to my raptor if im perfectly honest. i was expecting a big difference.
maybe i need to let windows settle down for a while, installed it last night.

You'll want it to run on SATAIII if you want to feel its full benefit. SATAII is limited to speeds of around 300MB/s.

Unfortunately your motherboard doesn't have SATA 3 ports.

Did you use AHCI mode when you installed Windows on to the SSD?

If you aren't using AHCI mode then you can fix this.

You need to change the SATA Mode from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS.

But you can't just do that otherwise your system won't boot.

You need to apply the fix here first.

So first make the changes in the link, restart the PC and go straight into the BIOS, change the SATA mode to AHCI, save the changes and the PC will start again and you'll be using AHCI mode.

See how it is then.

You also need to re-run the Windows Experience Index so your system can fully recognise the SSD.

OP doesn't have SATA III ports.
In general usage the difference between 250 sequential read and 450 sequential read isn't something you can feel, unless you spend all day reading large files and not, you know, using the PC.
The main difference is in random reads/writes, especially smaller ones like the 4K speeds shown in the benchmark. A HDD will struggle to do even a few mbps 4K reads/writes, the M4 here does 26/70, not to mention even sequentially it's almost twice as fast as the Raptor could ever be.

OP, are you set up in AHCI mode? That can make a big difference to how it feels. Is it a fresh install of Windows? If so, running the WEI can help Windows set some options for the SSD. If not, do a fresh install.
What boot times are you seeing, and what did you get with the Raptor?

Edit: Beaten to most of it, heh.

SATA3 or not, it shoulf still feel noticably faster. Not in pure read/write but in performance, responsiveness, access times.

I agree ,everyones saying its because he does not have Sata3 and thats not the case, even a Sata2 based SSD should be way way faster than a Raptor.

Agreed.

This SATA 3 stuff is utter rubbish.

You never in day to day stuff every transfer anywhere near to 300MB/sec.

Most i've hit is 125MB/sec reads from my SSD in a 24 hour period, and the only reason that even happened is I was transferring photos from my SSD to a new HDD.

But something is wrong if you can't tell the difference.

I went from a VR 300GB to a X-25M and the difference is amazing. Boots up wayyyy quicker!

Everyone isn't saying that, we're just pointing out as a fact that the motherboard doesn't have SATA 3 so it's not an option for the OP.

Some of us have even given the OP suggestions to try and improve the performance rather than just trying to rubbish other people's posts.

im using ahci anyway first thing i checked before install.

not noticed much difference at all. installing applications was a little faster but not by much.

maybe because i dont use it for much.
this a typical day
turn on pc (ill time the boot later, but raptor seems just as fast)
run mumble
check ocuk
load up steam/origin (on E:\)
run games
Turn off pc

maybe its just wasted on me,

i'm going to double post so its clear.

WD VR 300GB Boot Time: 46.223 Seconds

Crucial M4 Bootime: 42.559

not much in it at all tbh.

it seems to stay on the Windows Logo much longer than it used to on my old install..

only difference was my old install 35 proccesses this is running 40

Did you have the HDD's connected when you installed Windows on to the SSD?

If you did then quite often the Boot Manager partition (approx. 100MB) will get put on one of the HDD's which might slow down Windows startup while it waits for the HDD.

If you look in Disk Management you'll see which drive has the 100Mb partition on it.

I have a 60Gb sata II SSD (vertex 2e) and have been very strict as to what goes on it. Windows only (with firefox and a couple of very small programs). I have 23Gb used.

It does boot up much faster and quieter, the router is set up much quicker, I do not use it for programs so the access speed for these is much the same.

My philosophy is very small boot drive therefore quicker boot and quicker internet access but I can live with the programs being on a mechanical drive.

An example of my 60GB Vertex 2E from the windows logo to desktop and launching 2xFirefox windows + about 6 tabs on each only takes 12 - 14 seconds.

There is something wrong with your speeds i would say!

dont know if its revelant but on the windows logo screen both my bluray drives flash like there trying to load...
