Hi whats the lowest I can spend on a new mobo.gfx.ram.cpu to play BF3 at 1280*1024 at high details at a comfortable 50-60 fps?

Possibly this? is the PSU you got good enough for the card?

Also the board above maybe a Z68 chipset but its missing Lucid Virtu+Quicksync like a proper Z68 should have. But it is the cheapest board that will let you overclock the CPU.

A non overclocking H61/H67 board and i5 2300/2400 will also be extremely fast and cheaper.

i can get pretty good framerates at 1360x768 on ultra with a couple of things turned down to high, so something like this should be fine. i've done a full build because i dont know what you have already:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £94.99
1 x OcUK GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - OEM £77.99
1 x MSI H67MA-E35 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard - (Sandybridge) **B3 REVISION** £61.99
1 x OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £47.99
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £32.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £29.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £23.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £409.84 (includes shipping : £19.10).

however, if i can find out something about what you have already, then i can probably get rid of a bunch of things from that build:
are your DVD drives and hard drives SATA?
what make and model is your PSU?
does your case fit mATX motherboards?
is your RAM DDR3?

obviously stulids will be better, but this one will definitely do what youve asked of it :)

I have a Corsair HX620, im assuming my current 4850 512mb wont be good enough? I have a socket 775 motherboard that does support quads would it be worthwhile just adding a good quad in there or would the performance just not be there?

have 2 sata hd's and a DVDRW not sure if its sata or ide. Big enough case, SB X-fi, 19" tft

Good PSU, the 4850 is no good these days,

So theres still a fast quad core CPU and the Nvidia GPU.

keep the PSU, its better than what i put in the basket.

the graphics card, as you've suspected, needs replacing: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/177?vs=156

you'll get about the same performance out of the Q9650 and the i3 2100, so its probably best to go for the i3 2100 because of the upgrade paths open to you

heres my build without the stuff you dont need:

I wouldn't want to be playing BF3 with less than 1Gb Vram thats for sure.

The stuttering from when its trashing the PCI bus will be poor.

yup, just pointing him in the direction if he wanted to go and have a look at whats being said at the moment.

I just had a look, those poor people with what were good cards (GTX275/280's etc) now looking a bit flat due to the lack of vram, the graph with the 4870 512mb vs 1gb card is also telling;) nearly double the frame rate.

i know, its so painful :(

the op only wants 1280x1024

ive been playing the beta on a 460GTX 1gb with all the settings on ultra , 4xaa @ 1920x1080 and 40-60fps with the odd drop to 38/39fps but not lower.

768mb of memory should be more than enough for 1280x1024

if you have a 768 fair enough, but it doesnt make sense to buy the 768 when 1gb is available, as mentioned by a few people in gfx card forum it seems to like vram.

and you also need to take into account there are only 2 maps playable at the mo and we don't have any really idea if they are the worst when it comes to graphics requirement.

well only uses around 800-900mb at 1920x1080 with 4xaa and 1280x1024 is a tiny res theres no way he needs anywhere near a 1gb card for those res.

if he can get a 1gb for about thr same price as a 768 then theres not much point in going for a 768mb card though your right
