Motorway speed limit increase to 80mph by 2013

It's a bit of a waste of time and money though really - lets spend a year having a consultation on something everyone does anyway and will still do regardless of your outcome

Got to give all those civil servants something to do! "Yes, Minister" got it spot on. These constant consultations and feasibility studies are what cost a fortune, they should be looking to cut back on these if they want to save some money.

130kph seems to work well enough in France. I'd be happy with 80 but I would like to see it go hand in hand with more consistent enforcement of the limit.

Teach people how to use lanes and mirrors on a motorway before letting them drive that quick tbh...
Really think motorway driving should be part of the driving test, or atleast have it enforced to do a lesson on it.

A thousand times this. I bet these suggestions would do a lot more to ease congestion and increase safety on the roads.

They're not going to, they're just going to entertain discussions about it.

If they ever did it, it's quite likely that they'd strictly enforce the 80mph limit, instead of letting you get away with that +10%.

There's a lot we could learn from the French. Last month I drove from home to Prayssac, near Cahors. Everything about the French motorway network was just better, from the lane discipline of other road users, to the traffic levels* right down to the infrastructure and the quality of their roads. In the whole 600 miles/10 hours or so, we spent a maximum of 10-15 minutes in a traffic jam due to a broken down car. The rest of the journey was spent cruising at between 70-80MPH at all times. That's pretty good going.

*I know that France is larger country with a similar population and less cars in general, but their motorways are also predominantly two-lanes and the traffic still flows even at peak times. Also, these comments don't apply to driving the Périphérique around Paris, which was a complete cluster****, but even that was a doddle compared to the M25.

Trouble is, this introduces learners to the motorway network, which is not something I want on "my" motorway.

I think some kind of extended mandatory lesson, on a motorway to newly qualified drivers may be the answer.......

I'm not holding my breath, we need to improve standards on our motorway network, not ,imo speed.

Compulsory p-plates until you pass motorway test.

They could cut congestion, massively increase safety. By enforcing all laws, rather than just speeding. Lane disaplin, tailgating and the like. Its frankly stupid these days.

I'm still going to be doing 60, it'd cost me so much money to drive at 80!
Ridiculous idea I feel

Simple solution would just be to make something like the current Pass Plus system mandatory.

Learner = L plate = all current restrictions
Passed = P plate = can drive on your own but not allowed on motorways
Pass Plus = No plates = can drive anywhere on your own

The added stigma of the P plate would encourage people to get on and do the pass plus course.

If they're going to allow us to do 80 on the motorway, how about a minimum speed limit of 60 too? That way speed differentials will be minimised.

Vehicle can't do 60? Not prepared to do 60? Stay off the ****** motorway!

I think people who have just passed get way to much stick about this, The majority of retards i see driving like tools on the motorway seem to be of an aolder age!

I do agree that they should maybe enforce the pass plus or something once you have passed say within 6 months of this date.

It's not 'just passed' people specifically, but no one is ever taught properly how to use a motorway. You can't really go and force everyone to go and do a motorway lesson now so you do the next best thing, extend the current scope of compulsory learning elements.

Adding some compulsory lessons is one of the few ways you'd really educate people properly but it would be a long slow process as you slowly wait for 50 years worth of ignorant motorway users to die off :p

To be fair if the motorways were policed properly and lane hoggers in particular were re-educated by the police then they would be much better to drive on.

As it is, lane hoggers are left to their own devices and those who 'undertake' are prosecuted.

So 10% +2 would be 90MPH? Winning! :D

Whilst I'd be very much for a speed limit raise, variable limits (unlimited at 3AM in the dry, slow in the fog with torrential rain at rush hour, etc) would be my vote.
