Motorway speed limit increase to 80mph by 2013

This was one if the Tory pledges if they were to be elected, which they have been. Whilst I welcome the increase, it will take a long time for some of the older and more experienced drivers to accept it. I for one will probably carry on what I'm doing now which is almost always 75-80mph.

I'd much rather see lane discipline being enforced before a speed limit increase.

And 10% +2 at 80 is 90mph. Although when I was a lad, it used to be 10% +3 lol

you all go on about how bad this will be, how no-one knows how to stay in the left lane, no-one knows how to drive at these speeds when most people on busy motorways drive 80mph anyway..

yet did everyone know that the uk has the safest roads in the world ? less people die on uk roads than anywhere else on the world..

i think everyones just being terribly british and complaining.. imo its a great idea..

they want to stay green but they also want roads to flow better, to get the economy moving faster, less time on the roads, more time working..

I think people who have just passed get way to much stick about this, The majority of retards i see driving like tools on the motorway seem to be of an older age!

after my experience on the motorway a couple of days ago I'd tend to agree. lane discipline is bloody awful for a start! the number of times I was forced (so as not to undertake) from the outside lane to the inside lane to over take someone in the middle lane going at 60/65 was a joke. that and the utterly pointless and often dangerous lane switching that happens when the traffic becomes congested, on the M25 traffic at one point practically came to a standstill due to a clogged junction, it's 4 lanes wide for goodness sake, how can a blocked junction cause a stand still when 90+% of the traffic went straight past!?

can't see how changing the law will change anything other than making a common practice legal, I found myself climbing up higher than the speed limit just keeping pace the slower motorway users, everyone was doing 80+

in america you can over and undertake, which works fine over there, i saw no problems and i drove through 4 states..

tho people may find it annoying, i dont think many die from it.. if any, i cant find anything to say people die from cashing into middle lane hoggers..

The difference is that everyone cruises around at 50mph with the odd nutter weaving through traffic.

People are in much more of a hurry here in Europe.

im not sure about that one, they still get told to keep to the right lane and people still speed in the left, but if someones stuck in the middle, it doesnt cause a problem..

most of the motorways go, 55, 65, 75 over there

My car is quieter when cruising at ~4krpm (85-90) than at 70-80 (even though that's quiet anyway) so I say yay :p

Just let learners on motorways ffs. I swear the UK is only the country that forbids learners on the motorway network.

It should only be for cars that meet a certain weight to wheel base ratio.

Why? My Westfield can happily sit at 100mph all day long and it weighs bugger all. Or are you inferring heavy cars shouldn't be going very fast?

I am relatively neutral to this idea - there are so many pros and cons to weigh up. I used to be all for it, but not so sure anymore. A crash at 80mph (and more likely 90mph with people going over the limit) is almost 100% going to kill you.

Rubbish, it really depends how you crash, you could crash at 40mph and die or 140mph and live, it all depend on how quickly the car and crucially your body decelerates.
