You do NOT need a bag for a 7 inch tablet, my Flyer fits in my jacket inside pocket and I travel on the train with it every week while my larger tablets gather dust at home. Do you want a pic? Stop talking rubbish.

That's funny I'm sure I don't seeing as I can't wait for windows tablet and now decent cheap androids are out. Hardly going to recommend a £600 tablet when someone can only afford £200.
And if the amazon is released that is very interesting due to the ecosystem.

May work for you, but not everyone has jackets, or jackets with large pockets, or even finds it comftable. if it works for you great.

One HTC Flyer, on this lovely sunny day. It will be coming with me to Fulham vs QPR on Sunday on my train journey up there.
How on earth would I smash it? I'm not planning on falling over or anything. I have never smashed a phone screen in my life apart from an iPhone 3G which I dropped.
Pockets get knocked about, as I said I have a habit of break phone screens let alone something that size.
I must admit iPhones do seem especially fragile. Have you considered a better phone?
I bet that's a bit cumbersome. I'd rather just have a 4.3" phone with me.
If you're travelling on long-haul flights like the OP, you would have some sort of bag with you? Surely.
The tablet size does not matter on a long-haul flight, you're sat down in comfort for the most part, not running around the plane! So a 10" screen is going to be superior there.

Smashed 3 out of my last 5 phones, 4th one screen stopped working (iPhone) and lost(well stolen imo) an android one. New iPhone has survived so far.
Also broke a work phone ontop of that as well, but that was water damage.
Oh and smashed my iPad. Dropped a glass bottle on it.
I told you I had issues.

If your talking about the full ones they're two bulky, got a case for the iPad, but smashed it when I was using it.
What I dod have now though is insurance.
Need a new phone case though, I've broke that.
I accidently drop kicked my Defy well over 5 meters the other day, someone should write a app that activates the video camera after a sudden impact, block box stylee! 
(those waterproof/tough microSD cards are useful here too)

You haven't tried it, yet you prefer it.
They're to small and don't offer much over a 4" phone for pocket traveling and for proper traveling hours of time wasting you really can't beat 10" screen size.

Have a look at the Hannspad for £150, It's a 10.1" capacitive multi touch device with a 1GHz CPU, Tegra 2, 512MB Ram, 16GB inbuilt storage, Micro SD slot, 8 - 10 Hrs Battery Life, HDMI and USB ports.
Support from the community is taking off for this device with a number of custom roms available, I'm using GtabComb 3.3 refresh (Honeycomb) and it's amazing.
I also have an iPhone 4 so I wanted to try android and this Tab is very impressive and does everything I wanted. The only negative thing about it is Android Market is not as good as The App store.
I no longer have the urge to spend £500+ on an iPad 2
Btw When i'm surfing on my iPhone I don't miss flash either!

I haven't tried the 'mid range' sized ones yet (Galaxy Tab 8.9, Archos 8" etc) Most previews seem to think they're a nice compromise.
In the two weeks I had access to an iPad it never left the house, the overall footprint was just too big for 'casual use on the go' (but my Sony prs-350 is and they offer a nice size boost to 4" phones, esp for reading and films etc)
Those are my preferences which are probably different to yours
