New M5 to have engine sounds played in the cabin

Are they completely muting the engine? 'Cause if not, they aren't replacing it with something fake, they are enhancing it. Just like they enhance the steering, suspension etc. with mechanical or digital aids.

BMW have been enhancing exhaust notes in one way or another for years. Even my MY2001 330i had an acoustically controlled exhaust. Now they are enhancing it digitally. In reality it's a great idea; 99% of the effect, but light-weight and low-cost.

Like I said. I see it as a step too far. I want to wind the windows down and hear it crescendo through a tunnel. Not find that from the outside it doesn't sound of anything because they relied to heavily on the engine sound played through the speakers

That isn't what's going to happen. It's to enhance the experience inside the cabin with everything shut up. Open the windows and you'll likely here a quad exhaust V8.

This is utterly retarded and fake.

'Enhancing' lol what?

BMW just made a fancy version of those V8 engine fag lighter plugins and it's all of a sudden a good idea? Who honestly would have used one of those fag lighter toys? It's exactly the same deal 'Enhancing'. Why are you not rushing out to buy one now?

If this was an aftermarket system fitted by boy racers you would all be crapping on it. But because it's in a BMW M series it's an awesome enhancement feature.

Keep telling yourself its a good idea...

As you can tell by my car choice, I'm quite happy to stick two fingers up at all the tree hugging lefties that may bemoan my CO2 emissions or fuel consumption.

Your post needed to be finished by a video you just did in your M5 leaving a hillariously long number eleven to the tune of a V10 going WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHDADADAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

etc.

Isn't Audi doing something similar to reduce cabin noise by balancing frequencies or something? would be interesting to know if this also does the same...

The reality is the engine could sound epic if it wasn't for all the emission controls in place

Active noise reduction, very clever technology yet remarkably simple in concept.

Works exceptionally well when implemented properly too, in a way i'm surprised car manufacturers haven't used it much before, it's not a new technology by any stretch and not especially expensive either.

It works very very well with constant hums and drones, so it's pretty much perfect for removing road noise.

Even the road noise of that devil road surface up on the M6 ? which incidentally sounds like your driving over ribbed concrete.

No no no - you're probably right. The next M5 is going to sound like a diesel Mondeo with one of those soundracer V8s plugged into the fag lighter.

Of course it is.

So many modern cars have impure sounds these days I'm not surprised they are now planning to pump the noise into the car. My RS4 sounds epic, it does still sound impure however when compared to an old school V8, it just sounds 'tuned'.

I haven't read all the thread, but there must be an option to turn this off anyway? Autocar's review of the car didn't mention this feature at all.

I am going to offer that Autocar didn't know it had the feature and couldn't tell that the sound was being enhanced.

If M5 Active Sound Design is a 'fancy version' of the V8 lighter plugin, then the V8 twin-turbo itself is just a 'fancy version' of a lawnmower engine. Your argument is baseless. The principle of the idea is good, all evidence so far points to it being well implemented, BMW have researched and engineered a solution better than any aftermarket company could manage yet you denigrate it.

why not just open the window? a lot cheaper!
I wonder if the distributed cost of developing and installing this mostly software product will be smaller than the increased fuel consumption of all M5s cars having their windows open? I reckon the window may be the more expensive option! :p
