the bodybuilders who you are talking about, the ones who go the extra mile, are most likely using chemical substances to do so.
their is a big difference between them and natural bodybuilders.
i can guarantee you 90%+ of the male population in the UK wishes they looked similar to the below bodybuilder

this is the first guy i saw on their, i never picked him out, he is just an average bodybuilder.
guys who say they wish they didnt look like that are kidding themselves on, just like women who say they dont wanna look like nicole scherzinger.
the reason why you see guys with muscles and six packs in every advert for calvin klein underwear or some aftershave or a diesel advert, because that is what the average male aspires to be like.
That guy is not a bodybuilder he's an RWL (recreational weight lifter), a term I just coined.
I probly have as much muscle as him and I don't even lift weights.
