Thank you for playing the Open Beta and making the final game better!

We are very excited to see so many gamers join our Battlefield 3 Open Beta. Here’s an update on the Open Beta from DICE General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

I want to give you an overview of how the Open Beta is helping us shape a fantastic final game, what we are implementing based on your feedback, and how the Open Beta will help us deliver a robust gaming environment from day one.

The Open Beta is a true Beta

The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better.

Dedicated servers require dedicated testing

The biggest reason for running the Open Beta is to stress test our servers and back end. Already, we are seeing 6 times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2! The fact that Battlefield 3 is clearly our biggest game launch ever by a magnitude of 6 makes it doubly important to test everything.

We are constantly updating the News section on Battlelog with information on what we are fixing from Open Beta to final. We appreciate your time and your feedback. The data and feedback from the Open Beta will not only directly affect the final game of Battlefield 3, but its future development and support.

We’re heading out on the road this week to let journalists experience all aspects of Battlefield 3. Stay tuned for their previews, and stay tuned for the final game on October 25th. The final game will look, play and sound better than the Open Beta. You have helped making sure of that.

Hmmmm

Well if the dice guy is to believed fair play. One thing that has alway dogged bf games when first out is poor server conection, wether on master server connection issues to actually connecting to game servers.
That it was called a beta is all down to get pre-orders in and add to the hype/marketing campain. I wonder how many would have gone through all the hassle of discount codes and origin if it was labeled early access to server load tests.

Hmm, making it sound better is gonna be a tall order, unless they have more high quality effects. Looking better is pretty much a given though id say by a small amount with ultra detail.

Found a good bug just now. The end of round screen just had the L1 + L2 button indicators from the PS3 version!

I have to say, I'm really enjoying the game but its soooooooooo obvious how they have changed certain gameplay components so that this comes down firmly between casual (console) and the more demanding (pc) players tastes. Not a bad thing necessarily but certainly when it comes down to the teamwork aspect (lack of squad mgmt, VOIP, commander etc.).

its only a beta, i guess its normal for bugs?

This is the thing I take issue with - and I've been on the internal beta testing for a number of titles (I was on the Activision Visioneer program amongst other things) - its not normal with any game I've tested and I've got experience of similiarish titles such as ETQW - to be in this state this close to release... if you say well its an old build, yada yada, why on earth show off publicily an old and very buggy build to the world if you have much newer builds available? whats the point of people beta testing something if most of the bugs have already been solved? that then leads me to question the state of it this close to release.

The real bone of contention for me is the stance EA have taken, the way they seem to think they know better, etc. and forcing Origin onto people when there is an already established medium (steam) that they have used in the past and does a perfectly good job... and then they have the audacity to push this crap out... I might forgive the high and mighty stance and even put up with Origin if they actually put out a polished, well thought out game at the very least something that resembled a 1-2 month old beta this close to release not something that has issues with physics, netcode, game mechanics such as the logic rules governing gameplay rules that given my experience are usually sorted well over 6 months before release. (For me this is just adding insult to injury and I really do want to play the game).

For the record I'm a capable game engine programmer with extensive experience with idtech2/3 and other proprietary game engines and technically accomplished level designer (if the artistic side leaves a bit to be desired) with 10+ years experience with packages like radiant and unrealed.

Very fair points mate, i am still waiting for the download to be finished to see this game in action, if it doesnt look and play great ill be removing it, probably within 5 minutes. Just a way to find out if i will play the game or not, saves me a bit of money as ive said. I hated all the other battlefields, and yeah i agree , even though its a beta it should never have as many problems as people are saying this has. Will let you know what i think asap

Hows BF3 on Xfire setups atm?

Runs spot on with my 2 x 5850's. I do get a flicker every few mins with the beta drivers but its nothing major.

A bit different from F1 2011 which you have to turn off Xfire mode each time :(
