In another forum (can't name as they are a competitor) a similar thread contains these statistics...

...do some people flip from one to another and if so how do you keep it up..!! :D ( hint Martin :) )

Are we thinking BD will be competively priced? One of my 775 mobos has died and I am now thinking of building a cheap amd quad core rig to replace it!

I went for the 2500k. BD is a completely new design and only 1st gen. I'll let other people beta test it. I only usually buy the 2nd improved gen.

Im a bit late in here and iim about to do a build, long story short should i go 8 core bull or i5 for a bit of everything not just gaming? thanks, jordy

Go i5.

Unless this is you and you want to make more youtube videos with high render times. Then an 8 core wouldn't be a too bad move.

Hope it all works out for you Jordy.

Why did AMD not just release a Phenom x8 on 32nm? it would have at least given them a few years to fix Bulldozer or come up with something better. Compared to a Bulldozer core the Phenom 2 core looks great.

Because Bulldozer ISN'T really the volume part, Trinity is, and Phenom was in no way designed from the ground up to be an APU, at all, Llano, being based off it, is said to have a lot of production issues that Trinity doesn't have, designing from the start to be an APU can make a hell of a difference.

Likewise, Phenom 2 x8 version would still have run into 32nm being late and not huge quantity of production available, it would still have needed to scale up in cache per core and the more cores you get the more cache you need to keep performance up. Without a reworked and improve branch predictor a Phenom x8 would likely need even more cache than Bulldozer has to keep performance up.

Likewise, things like the memory controller, internal communication, htt, pci-e connections all need updating to handle a higher throughput. Phenom likely wouldn't be well balanced nor scale well for 8 cores +, remember Bulldozer will most likely go from 8 core, to apu + 8 core, to 16 core, potentially up to 24-32 core in several years, there isn't a chance in hell Phenom would scale up like that.

The first P4 wasn't anywhere near as fast as the last p4's, the first C2D wasn't even close to Sandybridge performance, first architectures aren't EVER fantastically efficient, you do the first, with a lot of new things, get it in the real world, see where the balance is wrong, and the follow up will be a whole lot better.

Piledriver might have a 10% higher IPC "in best case scenarios" but its likely worst case scenario that a follow up to Bulldozer will have the biggest impact. IE from real world use of Bulldozer they find prediction is overworking in one area, or everything is always waiting on the memory controller so they polish the memory controller, etc, etc.

Phenom x8 would be the single worst thing AMD could have done, Bulldozer first gen would simply always be slightly inefficient, because thats how CPU, and GPU design works.

THat doesn't mean Bulldozer won't be good, its just unlikely to be epic.

AMD can not do a Ath 64 vs P4, P4 wasn't good to start with, and possibly just got worse with Prescott, AMD had a weak target to beat, and did so well with a great chip. This time around Intel have a fantastic chip, idea's of smashing it are laughable, comparing core numbers and expecting performance to somehow be comparable, is laughable.
