If you had the use of a Kia Picanto for three weeks I can imagine not being overly excited, but you have a pretty decent sports car to use for 3 weeks and yet you are actually worried that it will be too slow and have come to the internet to be reassured?

I'd suggest a psychologist, your response isn't normal.

I had a 987 Boxster non S for 2 weeks when my S2000 had a bit of respray work done in 2009.

It was great fun. Fantastic engine sound and felt really really special. To someone who hasn't really had something like that before (a soft top sports car that is) you probably wouldnt notice or appreciate the difference between that and a 911. To that end, you will think its incredible and that you have died and gone to heaven.

The rule with soft tops is that unless its an absolutely torrential downpour or blizzard the roof should be down at all times, heated seats on, and blowers on full if its winter. I remember many a drive in the S2K with the roof down in non summer conditions. The best was on a clear winters night driving through the countryside. You just cant beat that sort of situation with the exhaust echoing in the silence.

Enjoy !

Damn, I already have a soft top and you are making me want another one.

Oh and yes - of course its quicker than the bloody golf - I knew that much at least. My concern was that it would be a dissapointment in terms of outright 0-60 pace (ive driven plenty of quick cars in my time) and im very thankful indeed that my predjudice has been destroyed.

0-62 and straight line speed isn't the 987 platform's party piece, just wait till you get it on those twisty B roads and you'll see, make sure you keep it on the boil (4k rpm+) and you won't be wanting for power. You'll be down the dealers with a deposit in no time :p

I felt like a bit of a ponce driving one solo recently (11 plate Boxster S with PDK). It's the sort of car you've got to drive with the top down like you don't give a f.... ..even if on the inside you do.

I'm beginning to wonder if in these austere times that driving around something as ostentatious as a convertible Porsche is a recipe for stress or not. The general public in the UK have always hated anyone enjoying their wealth irrespective of whether it came from hard work or a lotto win, but with the country in the state its in it just feels even worse now, or maybe it's just me. I got stuck driving through the town centre with people milling around from all angles and it was quite uncomfortable.

Long story short, enjoy it as its free - but don't be surprised if you hear negative comments when driving around town with the top down. Sad, but that's the way it is.

I've had mine for nearly 5 months now, I often am required to drive right through the centre of Woking and Guildford and have never had anything shouted at me yet. All this with the hood down, me in some sort of suit/work gear and sunglasses on.

I often get a 60 plate Boxster S manual as my courtesy car and again have no issues with it. Mine's got a private plate anyone so to Joe Bloggs they've no idea how old the car is.

You live in posh Surrey though. Unless you're doing the lap around Chertsey Road, no one is going to take a blind bit of notice of you. When I moved from Woking to South East London I noticed a marked increase in mild abuse in my convertibles.

Nowt wrong with doing 3 flying laps of Chertesy Road then parking up outsides KFC and RSVP.
