Supreme Commander & Forged Alliance on Steam

Me and my clanmates have been playing it for a while, great fun with 8 players :)

supcom forged alliance with the Blackops Unleashed mod (version 5 now i think) coupled with Sorian A.I and for matches that are painless to get set up use Tunngle

You can get Sorian & Blackops from the vault on GPGnet if need be but it's unreliable also here's one of the most common map packs as well

Black Ops Unleashed - http://forums.gaspowered.com/viewtopic.php?t=31172
Probably THE best possible mod you can get for supcom, many changes and improvments and unit adittions. try it yourself, it comes in several parts but they arent neccecary to play beyond having the main mod. but if you can get them all. Here's a video showng some of the new additions.

Sorian A.I - http://code.google.com/p/sorian-ai-mod/downloads/detail?name=Sorian_AI_Mod_2.1.1.exe&can=2&q=
Far far smarter than the default AI that comes with the game. Will give even battle hardened vetterans a run for their money.

Map Packs - http://forums.gaspowered.com/viewto...//forums.gaspowered.com/viewtopic.php?t=33841
A good selection of maps of all sizes.

Tunngle - http://www.tunngle.net/index.php?l=en
Superb P2P tool for connectiong with many games, very good due to low rescource use (unlike gpgnet) Sign up and go to the supcom room and join an existing game there or make your own.

oh one last thing, most of the players now use an unofficial patch which fixes a lot of the remaining bugs that the developer never bothered to sort out. You can grab that here.

http://supremecommander.filefront.com/file/FA_Patch_3603;102949

The main reason you will need this patch is if you dont use it (90% of the ppl i have played against via Tunngle do use it) you will get a desync box that keeps popping up and basicly ruins the game if you are not on the same patch.

Hope this helps and good hunting :D

Erm, interesting definition of 'most'. Seeing as the 3603 patch is incompatable with gpgnet, preventing you from playing any online games through there and instead forcing you to reply on hamachi or tunngle, I'd put them in the minority. Personally, I use the Community bugfix mod. Since its a mod it can be used online, and if all the players don't have the mod then it just isn't used. It contains all the fixes from 3603 plus other bug fixes to make the game much smoother.

A shame Supcom 2 was an abomination of an abortion that urinated all over the TA legacy you mean :P

It wasn't the same game, and originally I hated it. But I eventually started playing it multiplayer with the same people I play FA multiplayer with, and its not too bad. Doesn't hold a candle to FA, but its still fun enough. We sometimes go back it it for a little change before returning to FA again.

Still fire up FA for a blast every now-and-again, such a good game.

Used to love Ground Control II as well, I don't think that either of these games have been bettered.

Haha, well if you want to put it that way. There are still people arguing TA is better than Supcom 1 (mainly due to the system requirements and unit types).

Its not that Supcom 2 is that bad a game, its just that the others are so much better it just looks rubbish by comparison I guess, its like the Sonic 3D Blast of the series. I doubt TA will ever die completely, we are talking about the game that in 2004 (when it was 7 years old) beat games like Starcraft and C&C to win the best RTS ever award, for people that put game play ahead of graphics its still one of the best easily.

T.A was the first RTS game that really sucked me in.

Back in the day, the trendy people were playing Red Alert thinking it was the best thing ever but in comparison, T.A Anihilated it (See what I did there) - lol

Indeed, I still play it when I'm away from home on the laptop. Minelayers are fun :p but Hawk\Vamp spam is boring, it was a good decision to make Supcom's T3 fighters air-to-air only. Of course the UI improvements (fully adjustable waypoint-based orders, base templates etc) save a lot of micromanagement hassle that was still present in TA to an extent. I think Forged Alliance being less turtle friendly probably puts off less experienced players too.

Gah, I'm getting tempted to pick it up for £7.50 even though I should really just wait until christmas in the hope I have a better pc by then.

I played it fine with a Phenom II X4 @ 3.2, 4GB DDR3 and a Geforce 9800GT (in a large battle with 3 AIs, so up to 4000 units on a 20x20 map). As long as you don't go crazy with the graphics detail, even old cards do reasonably well.

Already have the disk versions of both these games but took a gamble yesterday just hoping the steam version would not have the same problems connecting to other players, it paid off.
Normally with the disk version every player would have to open certain ports and manage to get a connection with every other player and not just the host.
if there was 2 or more of you using the same router then only 1 of you would be able to connect unless you used other software like hamachi but then you had the sync issues and the lag to go with it.

Thankfully it all just works now through steam and no more manually opening ports and doing any other stuff. i think the multiplayer side of the game would have been doing a fair bit better had everything just worked like it does now.

it even ran well on my old e6600 and a 4850.

Fair point I suppose, I'm thinking more of stupid unit cap battles.

You mean 8 AIs on an 81x81? It's slow paced anyway, hell even the aircraft take several minutes to cross a map that huge.

The kind of warfare no game comes even close to matching :p

I vaguely remember trying to build a stupidly oversized battleship in a twisty river once... never again, that thing took minutes just to move across the screen :p

True :p

The T3 battleships are mostly a waste of resources, missile subs are much better, assuming your opponent is still around by that stage. The pro players never bother with anything bigger than a T2 destroyer.

Yes but I'm far from a pro player and I have a tendency to turtle so watching gigantic battleships make there way to an enemy base is fun :D

Caved and bought it anyway. Never had it myself, think I burned myself out of RTS after excessive TA and RA2 so never really had any urge to get it when it was new.

Fair enough, I prefer playing against other humans where that tactic isn't viable :p

I did, one of the rare occasions I paid ~£25 for a game, well worth it. The only reason I'm not playing now is unforeseen events caused me to downgrade my PC.
