New Sony NGP/Vita Screen shots, videos, and news (embargo now lifted)

Nice pics Todge. I'm really looking forward to this. Build quality is very important to me in a handheld and this doesn't look to dissapoint, is it supposed to be decent qulity? I was very dissapointed in the 3DS's.

If you take the last 2 new launches as a standard (PSP 1000 and the PS3) then I would guess the build quality would be excellent. We'll know more nearer the December 17th launch in Japan as more reviewers and blogs get their hands on final production hardware rather than the devkits.

It's a shame they don't swap the left dpad and analogue nub though, so few games use the dpad as the primary control method now and that nub is still in an awkward place.

Yeah but they've always been there, i don't think it'll be a problem tbh

I really want one, i have some nooby questions though:

There some psp games i want, but can they be played on the new vita or do i need to get them off the psn store?

I noticed theres a 3g version, what is that is it something to do with phones?

The 3G ver allows you to connect via 3G like your mobile does for online gaming. There will probably be a sim provided but no info on a provider etc has been disclosed. I'm sure someone else can provide more info.

Personally I'll opt for the wi-fi as this will be used around the home most of the time. Odd given it's a handheld. I've been the same since the original gameboy.

Vita needs PS2 games. I hear the PS3 is getting them via the Store, if these can be played on the Vita then that is the best feature ever as far as i'm concerned. Man i hope they do that.
That alone would make me buy one, nevermind anything else.

I think i can use the usb cable it comes with, like i do with the psp.

Regarding PSP games, anything you own on a UMD will not be playable since the Vita doesnt have a UMD drive. Sony have been looking at some kind of trade in type scheme but at the moment its all speculation. Even if they do do it, it may never get outside of Japan. All PSP games on the store will work however.

You will almost certainly be able to download stuff either on the PS3 store or Media Go on your PC and transfer it that way. A wireless router would be the best option of course since then you can play online.

Playing anything on the 3G version is going to be very very difficult because of latency and ping times. 3G is there for the social features, web browsing, streaming and playing games where it doesn't matter if there is a loss of signal for a few seconds like chess or something like that. Playing Fifa or COD or anything that requires real time actions to be performed just isn't going to work. At all.

To be fair, the Vita already has a 26 game launch line up for Japan (likely to be nearer 50 by the time it gets to the west), plus the entire PSP, PS1 and Minis collections that are available on the PSN as well as anything that gets onto the PS Suite which will be a lot of smartphone type games. Adding all PS2 games would be sweet of course but its taken them 5 years to get it on the PS3 with much stronger hardware. Asking for them on the PSV might be being too optimistic.

Some PS2 games have already appeared on the US store and will be on the UK one soon apparently. Initial reviews of the games seem good, they are simply emulated by the PS3 hardware so have the same look as they do if you have the disk in a launch model. There will be a limit to what games will appear as in a few characteristics the PS2 was actually better than the PS3. If any PS2 game used those particular characteristics to the limit then it won't appear on the store to download since the PS3 just isn't powerful enough to emulate it. Those though are likely to be big budget titles that have got or will get a remaster.

I would honestly doubt though that the Vita will get these same releases. It just doesn't have the hardware to emulate a lot of the games. What we have already seen however are some HD remasters being made that will put PS2 games on the PS3 and on the Vita. I expect more titles to start following that as Sony will provide the tolls and it means a bigger target audience.

Already Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 and Zone of Enders 1 & 2 have been announced for PS3 and PSV.

Ah ok, I really haven't read any details about the PS2 games on the PS3.
My hope was that like the PS1 classics, they could simply be downloaded onto the Vita.
I guess due to what you say, this isn't the case unfortunately with PS2 titles.

The games I would want are not that likely to get released even on the PS3 anyway to be honest. Such as Shin Megami Series, Suikoden 3 and a whole host og games which were harder to get over here during the PS2 days.

But, at least these remasters will work and that's still great.

One of my PS3s in B/C anyway with some PS2 games but again, the ones I want cost a bomb as they are often rare.

The Vita is going to be amazing regardless though and i'll be pre-ordering as soon as I see a more fixed release date. Amazon still don't have one yet so I spent £100 of my voucher credit on games, knowing in 3 months time it'll be back over £230..if it's still not due out soon after i'll spend some more. Trying to keep it up though so I get the Vita for free. lol

Odd i play all my online games on a 3G connection with no issues

Unrelated to Vita but when did the first PS2 games go on the US Store? I checked a couple of days ago and couldn't see any. There were a couple I fancied. Some strategy RPG i think was being released.
Guess i'll have another look tonight then if they are up.

That is interesting. Who is the provider? and what games are you playing?

I've used Network 3, and T-Mobile, games include, COD4, MW2, BLOP, BFBC2, WoW, Rift and Forza 3, COD and BFBC2 was on all 3 platforms as well

Also Network 3 is a good guess for the Vita‘s data provider since there doing there all you can eat plan now

They were added in last weeks US Store update I think. It might have been 4 in the first week. God hand was one that I know of, can't remember the rest.

I'm really surprised that you have been able to play FPS online with a 3g connection. Everything I've read on NeoGAF has suggested that it just wasn't going to be viable. I suppose it also depends on how stable and how fast that connection is.

As for the data provider, I know that for the Japanese release the first 500,000 3g units will come with 100mb of free data, 20mb of which is at HSDPA. The next 500,000 will come with 20mb, no idea if any of that is at HSDPA though. If you want more online then you just buy it in a block of hours as far as I can recall instead of just paying £x per month for £x amount of use.

Also individual file downloads will be limited to 20mb on the 3g services. So no downloading games and things from the store of the 3G. That shouldn't have any effect on the gaming side though as it's constant data rather than one file. Same for streaming afaik.

In the US they have gone with AT&T but no details on rates yet. Nothing at all known yet about network providers in the UK. However I imagine most people who also own a smartphone will just get the WiFi version. No need at all for two 3G contract/deals since you always have your phone with you anyway.

Also Pre Orders in Japan started being accepted this morning (their morning). Apparently all major online retails are already listing as out of stock. The 32GB memory card is at #1 on rainforest.jp in the gaming section with the 3G Vita at #2, screen protector at #3, Mario Cart 7 3DS at #4 and WiFi Vita at #5.

Still no ideas on how much stock those online sites have yet.
