IF steam goes bust?

Steam going bust would be a nightmare for myself - got about 750 games on there now!

That said, I'm not worried about it as I can't see it happening anytime in the forseeable future.

1. Gabe has confirmed that if Valve went bust, nobody would loose the ability to play or download their games.

2. Valve aren't likely to go bust remotely in the foreseeable future.

Why would I not buy games from the best digital distributor because of a highly unlikely "what if" scenario?

Steam is a "Subscription" service so kind of "Long Term Rent".

It is the best way for me to buy games at the moment so I do not give a ****.

Not really.

Most games have extractable CD-Keys and I believe, I might recall wrongly, that Valve said if they DID go under then CD-Keys (Or something to allow you continued access independently of the platform) would be released to you for all your titles. Hence physical 'owned' purchase.

It's not a rental affair at all really.

Even without Steam downloads, worst case, ISO images of retail media is easily available without owning physical media. Obtain, put in your owned CD-Key , job done.

OR

Plenty of time will be given if Steam was winding down to allow you to do Steam 'DRM' Free Game backups much like you can now. Burn to DVD, hey presto, media.

pretty much /thread right there.
i'd imagine gabe could personally fund game file hosting for a little while :p

I'm sure if a game has a license key then that game is yours to keep via the license, you'll just need an installation media? rather then it being rented out to you.

This is exactly the reason Why i like to buy a game, so you have a disk, a cd key, and something to show for your money.

The only games i own on steam is games that are only available on it.

Counter-strike..

Half life's..

Huge list aint it lol

And when your disk becomes unreadable?

You don't buy a game to have "something to show for your money" that you can place on top of the mantlepiece and sit in your armchair, revelling in its presence. You buy a game for the fun and the experience. If otherwise, you need to look at your priorities in life.

Steam is awesome. Those who don't use it are probably the same bunch who store non perishables in metal structures in the garden.
