Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Wow can't believe grown men are lapping up this re-hash of MW2 up like there's no tomorrow, and paying £63 for the privilege of a re-skinned game that came out 3 years ago.

Deary me. :(

Wow can't believe another grown man cares that much about how I spend my money :p

To be honest though, I agree to some degree however what always seems to be overlocked at these stages is that every cod makes millions and millions of £/$/€ per release so why are they going to change it all the much. It is always going to be an evolution rather then revolution.

Either way I am looking forward to it and will be buying it on release as I have a pre-order which I need to look into changing to the hardened edition.

For the time I've spent playing it on and off in the 1 year 11 months its been out MW2 works out at just over 2p an hour for the game and map packs.

Sorry :(

I like Die Hard 2,3 and 4 as well. Although I haven't got 29 solid days entertainment out of them, which I have from COD4 and MW2. That's a pretty good payout:time spent ratio, no?

COD could be £100 and I'd still get my monies worth.

MW2 I racked up 29 odd days, Black Ops, 19 I think. You could say I have plenty of time on my hands but this and FIFA are the only games I play really throughout the year. I got Gears and will get Forza but they don't get played half as much :)

What I cant get past is the MP just could be a large DLC Pack.

The map pack goes for about tenner

There are usually about 4 / 5maps per pack. So even if you paid just for the multiplayer maps included , it would be about £30.

Plus the entire single player , plus spec ops, plus survival mode and all the new game tweaks and perks etc.. for a tenner ?

The pricing is about right if you split the game up into DLC tbh.

When you combine all the DLC you get for free with the Hardened edition, it works out better value than buying it separately.

People are deluded if they think that everything in MW3 and all the DLC should be sold for tenner as DLC for for MW2. They charge that much just for 4 / 5 maps.

Bowling should have just said it was a new engine from the beginning maybe he was trying not to build expectations whilst things were up in the air, but it seems to have back fired now.

I think this whole graphics thing is simply down to the fact that BF3 has got an entirely new engine for it,whereas MW3 is just an upgraded MW2 engine.
Unfortunately BF3 plays similar to BF:BC2 and that's why i'm getting this game.

You're almost proving my point there Frostbite 2 isn't an entirely new engine by any means.

The way I see it:

IW 4.0 (MW2) to IW 5.0 (MW3) is the same as Frostbite 1.5 to Frostbite 2.

Neither really use an entirely new engine, but it gives the BF guys something to crow about.

Hardly any engine is a full brand new load of code as that would be far to time consuming, the way it's show off though is actual new features to an engine (new lighting systems, animations, sound, graphic settings etc) rather than just optimization of current features.

Which is why I think some people are annoyed with the COD series as it has been the same engine which has been getting upgraded each year to work better and better. But their engine really hasn't had many massive jumps in how it renders or plays.

I don't think its a bad thing as if you were personally making MW3 would you actually want to change that much and cause even more of an uproar due to it not being "MW2" etc. I would like them to expand the brand though which I'm guessing they were trying to do with Sledge Hammer but then everything went wrong at IW so they had to mix up the teams a bit.

As a few people have said, lots of work done to the engine isnt just necessarily graphical, it could be that the game runs quicker or smoother.

Certainly maybe ten years or so back the thing that was thought to be the real show stopper was something slow moving all the way across a map on several people's shared gaming session, for example rockets and such like. With the amount of things happening on screen at any one time in your average FPS online match now obviously lots of work has to go in to that process, and you factor in that one of the big things the devs are talking about is the added verticality in a lot of the maps and the game in general and id guess that if any re-write occurred on the engine then it probably be in that area.

Another thing to consider, again echoing whats been said in the thread, is that a lot of people are buying these games and the vast majority are pretty happy with them. I think COD 4, IMO, felt like enough of a leap at that time that im perfectly happy with the franchise honing and tweaking and not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. As a programmer myself, one of the key aims with anything is not necessarily to re-invent the wheel but to make use of whats already good and then improve in iterations.

I'm not too bothered about this years version but the previous games gave me months of great fun with friends.

As for your inseight, you could apply this to virtually any form of entertainment, books, movies, computer games. All are just re-hash versions of other books, movies or games.

Saying that, this will be the first year I haven't got it on release day. Looks ok, not really that excited about it though.
