Should I upgrade from my Q6600 to an i5 2500k?

As per title..

I'm Currently running a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
Gigabyte EX38-DS5
4GB G.Skill PC 8500
Asus 6950 with unlocked shaders.

Would the below be a good upgrade? Not too clued up on the Best Ram, Coolers and Motherboards these days unfortunately...

Oh, and I'm only really wanting to upgrade so I can max Battlefield 3 out :o

Thanks!

Only thing I can think of is the height of the ram heatsinks with that cooler. Apart from that, it looks like a good buy. Could even sell on your old parts and make some cash to put towards it.

Got a Q6600 running at 3.6Ghz and don't find myself in a rush to upgrade. May look at Ivybridge when it comes out.
For gaming, I'm sure I'd get more FPS with a graphics upgrade, but again, I'll wait for the next-gen. Things just run really well on my current system.
Can't believe I've had this chip for three years now.

To summarise, if possible try and get your Q6600 to 3.4, 3.6 and hold out for Ivy!

Same boat

I'm in the sameboat.

I've had my q6600 3 years and have the upgrade itch. No real reason for it my current system is great.

I was really hoping the 4 core bulldozer chip would be good as the price was that bit nicer than a 25k but have decided not to touch that chip with a barge pole (bd).

The sandybridge 25k would be perfect but is a bit pricey.

Sandybridge i3 is only duel core and does not overclock.

The 1156 chips are not bad but motherboards are expensive and the i5 version is not much cheaper than SB for less performance.

The only other options are the hex or 4 core phenoms which don't seem to overclock enough to justify my upgrade. (although the 95 watt 2.8 hexcore is tempting to OC).

I guess the best thing to do is wait for the 25k Sandybridge to come down in price...but as there is not much competition I might have a long wait :(

I just upgraded from an E8400 to an i5-2500k and don't regret it at all. I did go from 2 to 4 cores which probably made it more worth while but I have noticed a good increase in performance in all tasks that I do. If you can afford the upgrade now the latest z68 boards are ivy bridge and pcie-3 compatible making a future upgrade less painful.

I upgraded from q6600 to 2500k recently and I have seen a huge improvement in games. I already had a decent GPu so just bought 2500k, mobo and ram for about 330. Havent got round to selling my old stuff yet but will hopefully will get 100 back.

Hmm, just seen a mention of Ivybridge coming early next year? I might just hang on until then :)

I have flicked back both ways a few times now.

had my build in the cart, prices have changed and though I might as well keep my Q6600 and just get a new GFX card.

But I've gone back the other way now and am just going to order. Why have it playing on your mind, get a SB and switch up to 4.5Ghz easily and just leave it be. Not cheap upgrading but it's a good piece of mind and for me the most important thing is having a rig fit for BF3 which I know is going to take up a lot of free time!

Plus spending money on my pc will stop me wasting it on bits for the car :D

I'm a q9450 and q6600 user as well and will be waiting for Ivy if I upgrade at all. Find my system peachy and I haven't even installed my SSD yet!

I made the leap maybe 5-6 months ago now and I certainly noticed an improvement, enough for me not to feel any buyers remorse at any rate. However in your situation I would either wait for the sandybridge refresh or maybe even wait for Ivybridge (either for cheaper sandybridge parts or just to get ivybridge :)).

This a better spec for the time being?

How far can the stock cooler be pushed? I might order the Antec Kuhler at a later date (It's on pre-order atm)

I can use two of my current HDDs (a 1TB Samsung and a 500gb Samsung) , I need the new DVD-RW as the one in my current pc is IDE! I'll keep my Asus 6950. Use my Enermax Liberty 620w PSU.

If I was buying a system now, I'd be getting two lots of this:

Low voltage, and no useless oversized fins to get in the way of air cooling.
