****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

im looking to sell my iphone 4s 64gb for this... a freind showed me flash player and i was like WOW!!! ive come to realise that iphone is just a gimmick and is catching up to other people like htc etc... my question is this the best android phone atm? i heard a new samsung phone i think is due to come out over the next few weeks? if so which phone is it ?

pls also give your opinions on this s2 compared to the iphone and why android is better?

Thanks guys (and girls)

You'll find it almost impossible to get impartial advice on which is better between Android and iOS. You could simplify it to: iOS if you want a polished product that just works (sandbox) Android if you enjoy customisation (open source) and the ability to play around with it. But as said, this is a massive simplification.

The new phone from Samsung is the new Galaxy Nexus (from Google) which will run the latest version of Android (ICS). On paper the specs aren't much different to the SGS2 and in some aspects it is even trumped by it. But the thing that really turned me off though was the size, the SGS2 is already pushing the boundaries for how big a phone should be (imo), the Nexus is too big.

So I've just ordered myself a SGS2 and I'm selling my iPhone 4, I'm in a similar position really. I loved the iPhone but just fancied a change.

Don't use ROM Manager.

Turn your phone off, then press/hold VolUP+Home+Power. This will let you enter recovery mode.

Vol Up and Down go up and down in menu, Home selects and Power goes back to the previous menu.

From here choose backup/restore and then select backup. This will backup your current ROM exactly how it is, so if anything goes wrong you can go back to it easily.

After that choose wipe cache and then advanced>wipe dalcik cache, then go back and select install zip from sd and then select zip from sd, then choose the latest villain ROM .zip that you've put on your SD card.

You might be best doing a full wipe before installing VillainROM 3.0.0, but you can always just flash the new one first and then if you have problems just wipe everything and reflash. To wipe everything in CWM (recovery) select factory reset/data wipe, wipe cache and in advanced wipe dalvik cache.

Thanks. Unfortunately it doesn't give me the option to either backup or install from zip.

It has

Reboot
Apply update from SDCARD
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition.

I assume it's the "Apply update from SDCard" but I'm hesitant to do it unless I'm sure. Also should I do a "Wipe data/factory" reset first as it says on the villainrom site that if coming from a version before 1.2 to clear device first.

thanks again

Ah, VillainROM 1.1 didn't have CWM Recovery with it.

You'll want to flash CF-Root kernel first, this will give you CWM Recovery.

Flash this CF-Root kernel in Odin the same way that you flashed VillainROM originally (unzip kernel, put resulting .tar in PDA section, don't touch any of the other boxes, boot into download mode, connect via USB and make sure the box in the bottom left says "Added!" and has a yellow box with COM something in it above it and flash, make sure Kies isn't running in task manager before hand)

Then you will have a proper recovery menu and you will see all the options I listed before :).

Edit: Oh and yeah, if it says you should wipe first you probably should (I've only used VillainROM since 2.4.2 so didn't realise you had to wipe :p) :).

Thanks for the reply I have a question
Just read the galaxy nexus is not that great however it comes with a new android software

If I was to buy a galaxy s2 will I be able to load the new
Android software onto it?

Thanks

Followed instructions. Selected the new villainrom to update with chose reboot. It now appears to be stuck with a picture of a tophat and circle. It's been like this for about 10 mins. Is this normal? I assume it's just updating with the new rom in the background?

thanks

I think you pressed the power button to select and in fact turned it off. Press the power button once more and use the home button to select...

The top hat and circle is just what CWM Recovery looks like when you lock the screen :p.

Press the power button to unlock and select reboot using the volume for up+down and home to select :).

No probs, glad it's all working now :).

Download the VRTweaks app from the VillainROM thread (5th post or something I think), it has a few tweaks for the ROM like Camera/Video at any battery level, removing the permanent vibrate icon and stuff :).

I'd also recommend this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17846859&postcount=329. It has (you can choose which ones you want):
CRT Off
Advanced Power Menu (reboot/reboot to recovery or download mode)
Volume buttons change music level while screen is locked
Long pressing volume buttons changes song while screen is locked
Disable the confirmation when rebooting/turning off the phone
Home button lag fix (disables home button double click opening voice control)
% battery icons
And a seperate mod for reflashing the bouncy overscroll if you don't like overscroll glow

:).

w00t just ordered the phones4u deal - as mentioned earlier in this thread.
£49 handset, 12 months @ £36 for 300mins, 3000text, and 500mb data.

Coming from using a San Francisco so looking forward to it arriving! :D

What are the best deals on these phones as I can afford to buy one outright but prefer not to be in an 18month contract. Wouldnt mind 12 month if it was considerably cheaper but I really want unlimited bandwidth!
