OCZ has transformed itself from a small-time maker of computer memory for gamers and enthusiasts to one of the biggest names in the SSD realm today. OCZ has announced that it is launching a pair of new SSDs in November that are the highest capacity you can get in a 2.5-inch form factor. The new drives are in the Octane family and include the Octane 6Gbps and the Octane-S2 using a 3Gbps interface.

Both of the SSDs will be offered in up to 1TB capacity. OCZ claims it is the first SSD maker to hit 1TB in a 2.5-inch form factor drive. Both of the SSDs use the Indilinx Everest platform to deliver up to 45,000 IOPS. The SSDs also use proprietary page mapping algorithms for steady mixed-workload performance and the ability to mirror real world conditions across different applications.

"OCZ has reached an important milestone in the development of its own controller technology," said James E. Bagley, Senior Analyst with Storage Strategies NOW. "The high sustained performance, even with compressed files, the rapid boot feature and high access speeds using SATA 3.0 protocol puts their controller technology in the major league."

Both of the SSDs have a dual-core controller chip and up to 512MB cache. They also come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities in addition to the 1TB version. The drives also both support AES encryption automatically. The Octane has 560MB/s reads and 400MB/s writes. The Octane-S2 has 275MB/s reads and 265MB/s writes.

Pricing is unknown at this time.

"Until now SSDs have been tailored for specific applications, forcing users into a product which maximizes performance for a narrow band of applications, but is significantly lacking in others," said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology. "The Octane Series solves this problem by providing the highest level of performance across varied workloads including mixed file sizes and mixed compressible and uncompressible data, all while nearly doubling NAND flash endurance."

Good to hear technology is still moving forward even with the amount of gloop that is going on in the world right now.

Which reminds me, I need to update the firmware on my OCZ Vertex 3. Supposedly the new firmware reduces the number of bluescreens, as I tend to get at least one every couple of days - sometimes 2-3 a day.

At least OCZ is developing an alternative controller technology, as I'm pretty sure they realise that the current Sandforce drives are giving them a bad reputation (despite the stellar performance).

So ssd drives now have as much storage capacity as mechanical drives in the 2.5" form factor. With the prices of ssd drives coming down and the prices of mechanical drives going up it's just a matter of time till ssd takes over.

Will this BSOD every other day like all the other OCZ SSDs? If so, I don't think it's the capacity they should be working on :p.

Had very few issues with mine and no issues since latest firmware. I only had issues in the past when downloading on Steam overnight and it BSOD, but as mentioned no issues since new f/w so would definitely buy OCZ again.

Also great news with a 1TB size drive :)
