If you had a time machine

I love these threads. I'd like to go back to some massive historical battle. Something like Waterloo, or Agincourt. But I'd have to be in a protective bubble that nobody could see and I could happily float around and pick the best vantage point. I'd also be quite interested in seeing life during the dinosaurs.

Well if I had a time machine I'd go back to a few hours before the biggest lottery win

You're doing it wrong. You find the biggest draw that nobody won and go back and win it! No sharing!

(unless the largest win by one person is still a minimum of twice as large as the largest week that was not won. But I'm pretty sure there must have been at least 1 £100 million week that didn't get won.)

Well I don't think you have thought about it.
I'm crap at maths but I did a quick spreadsheet adding 5% to £1000 every year from 1920 to 2012 and I get a sum total of £89,005.23

Can somebody verify this?

sorry for the dumb question, but would the transition from pounds, shillings and pence to pounds and pence have any impact on this? because you would be buying 1000 old pounds, but the pound itself might have changed value in the transition (i have no idea if it did or not)

another problem with all this is that people arent likely to accept money from the future, as it will look like really bad fakes

also, people are forgetting that it it would be very difficult to go from lottery win to ~£140mil* in the bank in 24 hours, so you would have to make it a very recent lottery that hadnt been won so when you returned to the present day you could collect your winnings before the deadline for collecting (i am pretty sure that there is one
*about the highest jackpot that rolled over that i can think of
think the best money maker is the one someone mentioned before: invest in a company that very recently became massive

Or that £160 million euro win, with 1 winner, and buy 159 tickets with the winning numbers ;) We'd still be in range to claim now....

If I had a time machine I'd have already gone back in time before I had a time machine.

Surely you need to go forward in time for that? isn't this about going back in time?

No, you'd either go back to just before the lottery results so you'd still have time to get the winnings into an account (Really don't know how fast it all works) or simply tell someone from your family, or a friend.
Like I'd tell myself, or my brother, here are the winning numbers for the biggest lottery I can go back far enough to trust someone. Zoom ahead a few years, oh look I'm rich an..oh where's my flat? oops.. my life has changed, I know nothing! D;

You could also tell random people about other future lottery results, they could either run off with it, or make a deal of giving them some of the money, other worldly events to take note of, blah blah blah.
It's all about the money, I coudln't care less about much else for 24hrs, I'll go back to my same miserable life afterwards but no longer poor.

How would your life still be miserable if you weren't poor? I'm pretty sure Bill Gates and Richard Branson aren't miserable.

Kim Jong Il's got a Maclaren F1, so I'm pretty sure he's happy

If it was a one time only, it would have to be self serving. Go back about 20 years. Buy shares, talk to myself, talk to parents. Leave several letters and access to shares and the like with a lawyer with instructions when to pass them on.

I would go back to roman times and take some modern day technology with me and just leave it somewhere.

Also pop back and put some numbers on lottery's for the next 24 big drawers.
So i won every one of them. See if they could work out how I did it. I am sure there would be some investigation into me though.

I would also like to go back in time and see some amazing composers. ie Mozart, Grieg, Brahms etc playing. I would like that.

So many things. Maybe go and see the Aztec's, the building of pyramids, the crash at roswell.
