Not allowed speaking another language break the Human Rights?

So where I work there are people of many cultures (me being one) and recently there was a notice on the walls saying soon everyone must talk in English, so no Polish, Hindi, French. So I was wondering is this infringing on our Human Rights at all before I make some hell at work?

Dont like it **** off, simples

Remember working with an Iranian and his English was superb, was really good learning about his life back in Iran, opens your eyes, his English was better than my Iranian but I have no interest in working in Iran.

I think you should speak the language most efficient for WORK purposes, however for casual chit chat you should feel free to speak in whichever language you bloody well want.

To the oppressive, paranoid control freaks:

(from another thread)
Be offended then, nothing happens.

Grow up!

why would you want to speak anything other than english at a company in england?

its distracting enough when some randomers are yelling on a mobile phone in the street and all you hear is abauga naihjaihaia drihfihif hiihhidhid..

nevermind when your trying to work and your brain is hearing sounds it cant explain!

English is not my first language, but I would totally agree with the policy, you are working in England so speak English! Seriously...

Integration aside, how are the management supposed understand what your talking about if it's in language they don't understand. You could be talking about any number of things you really shouldn't be on works time. Slagging of customers, painting the company in a bad light, bullying colleagues, even comiting crime etc. It's just not fair or courteous on those arround you.

This.

I have no problem with a person speaking Polish to their Polish friend. I have no more interest in what they're saying to each other than I do the two friends speaking in English. Obviously, in an English speaking work environment, professional courtesy would be to make an effort to speak English, just as I would expect to have to learn German if working in Germany.

you're telling that if i got a job in china and flat out refused to learn any chinese, they wouldn't be butthurt?

muppetry right here

OP isn't 'flat out refusing' to speak English in the first place, but his boss is banning him from speaking his native language at all. Completely different to the example you've given..

So, if you were to have a casual conversation in English at your Chinese workplace, not specifically related to work, then no, I don't think they would get as butt-hurt.

hmm, fair point; but quite frankly i consider it rude when i'm around foreign friends/colegues who speak in their native tongue when others are around, it almost leaves the taste of 'they're saying something they shouldn't be' in the mouth.

as BNP as it sounds, when you're at work, you should speak the language of that country, it's polite.

How about you learn how to use English properly first before complaining about other people?

Brillant that the first thing the OP thought, rather than just speak English at work, was is this against my human rights.
Sums the human rights legisation up quite nicely.
Someone is making me do something I don't wish to do, even though they are paying me for my time.... Hmm, human rights bla bla.
