Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

Its like they pay 700 on a new i5 rig and get an 1TB HDD for OS!

Do they not understand than an SSD is one of the best Upgrades for a PC!!!!!

Pay 60 quid less on the components combined and get an SSD!

Aye, they'll go bat **** crazy spending hundreds more to get a super Extreme ultra edition motherboard that might let them get another 100Mhz out of an overclock, whilst spending the same cash on an SSD will make a million times more noticable difference.

Given the prices of drives I'm going to have to dance with the devil, and expand into my second file server, which up till now has been mirroring.

Just picked up a Samsung F3 1TB for £69.50 delivered. Still almost twice what I paid a couple of months back but all my old/spare drives are low capacity / slow ancient things, so decided I had no choice. You've got to laugh.

Wonder what they will be up to by this time next week?

You can get better performing 2TB F4 drives for a bit more.

component sellers make me laugh western digital green is made in malaysia so how can flooding in thailand make prices go up

can understand the digital blacks going up as they are made in thailand

think the hard drive companys are just taking the p out of us by driving the prices up

have a look at your drives and see where they are made

70% of the components for the drives come from Thailand as this is where they are made. Just because a drive says "made in XXXX" doesnt mean that it is. It just means that is where all of the parts were thrown together.

If I was Western Digital I would just close the Thailand plant permenently and concentrate on Malaysia, hopefully the idiots haven't built that plant in a high risk flood area.

Western Digital to Invest $1.2 Billion in Malaysia

"Construction is planned to be completed by the third quarter of 2011 and the facility will be ramped to full capacity over the following five years," the statement said. " There will be up to 10,000 additional jobs."

mikeo i see the same drive at 49.99. ;)

Try actually clicking on the LINK. It may show £49.99 but when you are re-directed to the site, it says the best part of £70.

Another says £55.76 (popular retailer) but when re-directed to the site, it says £107.86

If I could get them for what you quoted, I would buy a few and make a killing!

Moral here, check your facts.

Fair comment. But I wanted this drive specifically to raid with another one I have.

Ah okay, that makes a lot of sense.

In general though I am amazed how much the prices of 1TB drives have increased.

The supply must really be squeezed by OEM PC manufacturers.

think this link explains the situation a little better but it still does not explain why all drives have rocketed in price not all manufacturers would be effected by the floods in one place. Does not make good business sence to have every thing manufactured at one plant

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile...why-thailand-floods-mean-pricier-hard-drives/

for example western digital does not produce all its drives in asia

seagate produce drives in china and thailand

these are but a few of the manufacturers and i think they all produce drives all over the world so the cost being drove up by flooding in one place really should not effect the whole market being pushed up

still think there is more behind it than floods

never thought about the OEMs good point

not that i've seen to many 2tb drives in a dell computers would have thought the most oems would be using 1tb or less drives and at the prices that most suppliers where getting the drives pre flood they would have had loads in stock

shocking to think a WD 320Gb blue is now the same price as a 2Tb green was a few weeks back.

well at least nvidia cards are not made in thailand i shudder to think at the hikes on those, guess we will all have to wait it out

It doesn't matter whether all the discs are made in Thailand or not, the price hikes are down to good old fashioned supply and demand.

Ie. prices are going up because there is a reduced supply.

as above has stated its pretty simple when you think about it.... sad but true everyone is out to make money at the end of the day like it or not
