I think 30-40 would suit me fine, as I don't want a big house and loads of kids or too many expensive things and as long as it is in a job I love, even better! As long as it pays for the house, some home comforts and the occasional holiday, that will do me!! I like the simple things in life :)

for those of us who didn't have rich parents/uncles to guide them hand by hand there's only 1 thing that will make you success in the professional world really, motivation, ambition and confidence and I believe these are 3 very important things that any one must have to success with any goal.

These 3 are certainly important, I don't think many could deny it, however who you know, and your network of people is so important. They don't have to be parents, they can be people you meet at networking events etc... It's still one of THE most important factors.

My PhD was paid in the 6 bracket, my new job will pay me in the 7 bracket and I hope to move to the 8 bracket within 2 years. My girlfriend earns in the 8 bracket already and may move to the 9 bracket within 3 years.

Non of this is in the underpaid UK though.

Presume you did a PhD in Switzerland then?

At this point in my life 23k - 30k

I'm 27, on 19 at the moment. Job is relatively stress free though and im getting to go a few places abroad. Good working environment etc

I love posts like this! I aim to be on at least 4x my age for salary.

Waits for guy with 5-10+ x age!
Ok I'll rephrase a little, I mean realistic ambition. There aren't many areas that you will realistically be on 5-10 times your age! :p

So realistically are you aiming to be on 4x your age?

EdIT: and that has to be with me still working to live not living to work!

If it was Switz and converted at present exchange rate it's basically meaningless. I just got back and, although it's not as bad as the summer, it's still multiples more expensive to live in than the UK without a corresponding increase in service/good quality.

I think 2x is a fair goal. I was being a bit cheeky since I am on 4x already, so it is realistically possible for me :). Some luck involved, but also hard work.

I am 27 and have been there and tracking well since 25. Without killing myself - working from home today and will finish 5/6 ish.

That is very true, it's where I live :D though go over to France or Germany and things are much more reasonable!

I am a SharePoint Consultant, work on contract. I devoted a lot of time outside of work initially to learning new things and getting better, knew that it would pay off, and it has. As mentioned, been in IT for only 3yrs (that's including starting at the bottom rung of the ladder back then).

I put in the hours at home to bring myself up to speed on what I liked, trained hard. Got my MCITP EA within my first year in IT, liked SharePoint. Got involved in one project while in support, led to my next job... worked up from there. Hit the books and played a lot in spare time. I have the confidence and can pull it off. I can sell myself and have a good enough base now to back it up.

I believe that nothing is out of your reach and I am determined to get to the top in everything I do. I'm not even sure I want to work in IT, but you know, while I'm here I will make it to the top.

I used to be in a totally different industry, went from 18k at 20 to 31k at 22. Then the company I was with went down the pan, it was badly run, should have seen it, but that was in the 2008 "crash" and I was out of work 6 months. Decided I wanted to be in IT, thought everyone needs it. Started from there and have got to where I am now.

You want it, go and get it. That's all there is to it.
