1999 Impreza, Project Track Car

If your turbo is getting very hot, have you considered water injection? It sprays (normally) just before the throttle body, reduces the combustion temperatures, reduces EGTs, and increases power. Might be worth a look into for you..

Thread revival,

Impreza has been in storage for last year or so, just haven't had the time due to work and becoming a dad for the first time.

Got the car out a few weeks back and decided to get it mapped again as I eventually decided the problems with the turbo were related to the map. Took it to Andy Forrest who is based near Edinburgh he got it running really nice. He also gave me two maps one at 350hp and one at 400hp. Which will be handy to knock it back a notch if it's running hot on a track day.

The car is now in the paint shop getting sprayed white and having things like the aerial, boot lock holes etc filled.

Looking for opinions on the colour of the roll cage, I'm thinking black or red but open to suggestions.

Also once the cage is in it will be difficult to remove the dash again without a lot hassle so at this stage need to make the decision whether to remove the heater box and controls or not. Its a bit of a dilemma, it weights a good bit (very technical term) and race cars certainly don't have them but as this is a track car, could it do with the comfort of having heaters?

I will get some pic's up once the car is painted.

heater matrix removal in a classic is an utter ball ache, for the weight you would be saving I'd be content to have warm feet! :D

I think a red roll cage will be a suitably nasty clash to look

:)

Andy Forrest is a brilliant mapper, had my Impreza mapped twice by him (different turbos) :)

Have to agree, he made a lot of changes to the maps, got the idle running smoother, the air/fuel ratio is now spot on. And finally after having it mapped 3 bloody times its running great.

Its not such a bad job when you know none of its going back in, it does weight a good bit if you consider all the switches, cables and ducts that could be binned. Its more the windows steaming up on a typical British summers day that would be a real pain.

Think red would look good. :)

Don't leave the car without any heaters / blowers.
I had to cut a section out of the box on mine that fed the front dash vents as the cage bar crossed in front of them.
All the race cars we do, we fit an aftermarket heater matrix / blower motor from a kit car supplier.
It's an absolute no no not to have any form of demist function. The day it rains it game over as you can't see a thing once it's misted up!

The misting up is a worry, Have you ever tried one of these though-

I've seen some nice lightweight road/race heaters about. Should fine for clearing the windscreen. I was thinking of getting one for my old mini, it's also getting the stripped out and lightweight look.

Not those specifically, but yea that is an option but remember you'll still need to demist the side windows.

This car sounds like a beast, I'm running around 300-320bhp (VF39) in my 99 Turbo now although it's really laggy as I haven't changed the maninfold/up-pipe yet. Wasn't a problem on the trackdays I did this year though, they are a laugh to take round the track although not cheap to run! I'm worried that my uk 5 speed will die on the track next year only running approx 300Ib/ft, I'm guessing on your new map you could be running a fair bit more than that so are you going for a 6 speed STI box? As for the cage I say go for a red one, I'm thinking of getting a red Cusco 6 point cage in the spring..

have loved reading this thread and the work and effort you've put into a classic.

but can i be the first to say, congrats on becoming a dad. nothing in life comes close. Except maybe blowing smoke in the face of an Evo 9 :D

These are pretty awesome, a lot of the kit car guys use them :)

Going to keep the 5 speed till it breaks then look at upgrading to 6 speed. What tyres did you use on the track days?.

I've bought some Khumo v70a on a medium compound, been told they are quite good. Not bloody cheap though, roughly £600 a set, I hope they'll last more than 1 track day or its going to be an expensive day out.

Thanks, becoming a dad has been an amazing experience, the wee guy is great fun, very time consuming though, don't seem to have any free time these days.

This looks ideal, do you know if it has variable speeds? or if its just a simple on or off?, Probably prefer the latter then all I'd need would be a single switch with no resistor.

Car's looking good so far, can't wait to see the respray. Personally I'd go with Sparco Blue for the cage, would go very nice with a White shell.
