So basically, My mate bought Acer 5742G with i5 480M CPU and nVidia 540M GPU.

Intel HD Graphics drivers install perfectly fine.

However, NO DRIVERS work for the 540M. I've tried countless combinations of intel+nvidia drivers and every time the nvidia gpu gets "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" in the device manager. Also if I try to open the nVidia Control Panel, it gives error which says something like "cannot open control panel because the gpu is not bla bla something :D (forgot it and my mate went to sleep so i cant check (using teamviewer for doing everything on his laptop))"

Updated the Acer BIOS as well.

Laptop is running Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64.

Any help will be much appreciated. If we can't fix it by monday, he (my friend) will call the retailer for repair/replacement.

Thanks in advance!

you are installing optimus drivers right? Im presuming it uses optimus if it has Intel and nvidia gpu.

try the drivers and install instructions on the acer website.

Try using driversweeper to remove all Nvidia files http://phyxion.net/Driver-Sweeper/Driver-Sweeper/Version-3-2-0/Installer.html

Then try the latest drivers from Nvidia's site: http://www.nvidia.co.uk/content/Dri...international-whql.exe&lang=uk&type=GeForce M

If they do not work then try the Nvidia drivers on Acer's website but they might be a bit old. http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...=Aspire 5742G&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

I shall try driver sweeper later today. Thanks

Well I used the nvidia driver finder on their website to get the drivers... I don't see other link for "optimus" specific drivers. Plus there is Driver.Optimus folder in the drivers I tried. However, after installation it says what has been installed, and with the ones from nvidia.com, it says Nvidia drivers + Nvidia update + PhysX. Nothing about optimus.

Please enlighten me if I am doing something wrong :D

UPDATE

Tried driver spweerer. Installed latest drivers. Nothing

Then tried 280.26. Nothing.

Tried the ones from Acer's website. Nothing

:D

Still gives "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"...

At this point I don't know who to blame :D

Thanks anyway...

Well try following the steps on this site:

http://www.personalcomputerfixes.com/general-errors/how-to-fix-windows-7-error-43/

Error 43 also occurs when a device is not connected properly so the 540M is a dedicated in the laptop may not be seated properly or if it is soldered onto the main board then it needs to be replaced.

Step 1 and 2 have been tried with no success. Step 3 wouldn't be appropriate since he only got the laptop yesterday.

Anyway, my mate will call up the retailer tomorrow and see what happens.

Will update the thread once everything is sorted out to make sure that if ppl have similar problem, they know what to do :p

Just an update on what happened.

Basically, the card was either faulty or not seated properly as mattjd said.

He sent back the laptop, got new one and its all good. Works like a charm with drivers straight from nvidia's website.

By the way, thanks for trying to help!
