I need some tips people! I haven't played any of the previous BF's but have played all of the UT and Quake games to a fairly decent level for a number of years so I'm no FPS nub. However, I'm shockingly bad at BF3. I can't tell where the enemies are (should I be using my map?) and I'm not really clear on what the 4 different roles do, or rather how they should be played.

Anywayone have advice for me? Cheers.

Start with this video on bad company 2

Most of it translates across directly, but the assault and support roles have been tweaked in Battlefield 3

Next stop is to read this on what the classes in BF3 do:

FPS games only use approx 10-20 kb/s so to you can play the game perfectly fine on a 1mb connection. Having 50mb or 100mb makes no difference.

The difference is whether or not you have a crap ISP.

Generally really happy with it, the only thing I am sick off is being shot at so i take cover round a corner and on my screen shows I'm round the corner safe but half a sec later I'm dead. I also don't think the maps are as quite good as Battlefield 2 but there good enough also depends on what you think is a good map suppose you can't please everyone. I am just looking forward to the Strike of Karkand DLC.

Try and stick to cover, avoid running out in the open to avoid getting shot at. Moving slowly and cautiously, stopping every now gives you a chance to look for targets.

I was chuffed when I managed to snipe the pilot out of a helicopter, and before that I managed to knock a chopper out of the sky with two tank shells :D Something very satisfying when you take out a flying target without a locking missile!

I'm disappointed there are SIX active threads for this game currently. Any other game and people start jumping down your throat about that sort of thing...

Are the Mods having a Siesta 'cos there's some serious merging needed on the forum today?

Do a search for BF3 or Battlefield 3 and you'll turn up over 100 threads.

I give this game 6 months, maps are linear and clustered affairs, jets and choppers feel dumbed down and are not fun to fly, vehicle combat in general is poor. Team work is very poor due to poor squad management, no in game VOIP, and lack of squad leader orders. Player movement feels clunky and cumbersome, it takes an age to go from prone to standing or even from crouch, enough time to tale a sniper bullet in the napper.

This is no true sequel to BF2, it's bad company 3 and nothing else. Dice said PC is the lead platform I see nothing of the sort, rushed commo-rose that is not even functional, embarrassingly bad and rushed chat menu, where is my in game ping? where is spectator mode, where is battlerecorder, this a console game first PC game second. Why do I have to go through the in game main menus to access squad functions, in BF2 it was press of tab.

As said the biggest let down are the maps that are catered mainly for infantry combat and dare I say it 24 players as seen on the consoles, noway these maps and cap placement cater for 64 players, they are getting boring very quickly and the only staying factor me is checking out the unlocks.

Best post by far and totally right far to many console references left over to be a PC first title

I'm surprised Dice left vehicles (especially tanks) struggling to drive over things. On Kharg Island there is this one small forklift truck near D base that completely stops a tank dead in its tracks.

When trying to achieve reality within a game, it's those small things that can really make the difference, for me anyway.

Is anyone else having problems joining games? It seems to log in and load in Battlelog okay but as soon as it goes to launch the game the screen goes black and nothing happens.
