Guild Wars 2

I haven't played Guild Wars, do I have to play Guild Wars, before playing guild wars 2. Cause the story might be linked to the previous guild wars.

You dont need have played the first one, though there are rewards for people who did and completed a lot of achievements.

The rewards are visual vanity items only like pets and weapon skins though, you arent disadvantaged without them.

So if I complete the previous version I will be able to achieve more exclusive items. I am willing to do this just for the items. :)

Not just complete, you have to complete and grind quite a bit for all the items.

But it can be done in 1-2 months.

You will get better items in GW2 anyway than the bonus ones from GW1.

The bonus items will just let players type in /bonus and get a free full set of armor, weapons and minipets in GW2.

(Well, the bonus items will be obtainable in an area in GW2 that links the two games, and selectable one at a time rather than all of them annoyingly flooding your inventory like they do in GW1)

Original estimates were the end of this year i think but that looks highly unlikely

IMO they would be wise to wait until the initial surge of SWTOR players have lost interest in the game and aim to pickup players looking at alternatives. Going head to head with SWTOR would hamstring the release simply by being crowded out

Yup, seems to be a massive following for that game.

SWTOR does not have a larger following than GW2.
The way you seem to defend everything Guild Wars related on this forum, often times very aggressively, leads me to believe you're just saying that because you are anticipating it more. I know that most people who are following Guild Wars 2 believe quite strongly that it's going to be better than SW:TOR (and every other MMO), but that has nothing to do with how big the following is.

If you are basing that on any kind of numbers, I'd be happy for you to post them. Just quickly glancing at the GW2 forums (all the top unofficial ones) and the official SWTOR forums, your statement is certainly thrown into question. On general gaming forums that have a lot of discussion on both games, SW:TOR threads are almost always longer and have a higher number of people posting in them, including here.

That wikipedia list looks quite questionable. Plus it includes all the expansions as part of the game so the total amount of purchases is nowhere near that figure (seeing as a large number will have all of them)

3 reasons why TOR will sell more:

1.) It will likely be better marketed.
2.) It's Star Wars, I've heard the brand is kind of popular.
3.) It's Bioware, I've heard they're kind of popular too.

2.) It's Star Wars, I've heard the brand is kind of popular.

This alone will bring in a huge amount of people, who have never even played an MMO before.

Also when I last played WoW, people were even anticipating TOR nearly 2 years ago.

Just because GW1 is the '2nd best selling MMO' doesn't automatically mean it has the largest following.

FYI I'm looking forward to GW2, no hating ;)

The fact that it's BioWare and is the next game in The Knights of the Old Republic series is probably a big enough factor to bring in more people than the success of the original Guild Wars ever could, even disregarding the fact it is based on the world's most popular IP and is backed by the biggest computer game publisher in the world right now.

I'm also not hating on GW2 - I'm looking forward to it much more than I am SW:TOR. It's just that bhavv doesn't seem to speak with a level head when anybody says anything against the Guild Wars games, and he clearly has an agenda against almost all rival MMORPGs.

Well according to MMORPG.com -

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/4496861#4496861

Which game will you play

GW2 - 44.8%
SWTOR - 24.1%

Googling for many other such threads clearly shows GW2 being hugely favored over SWTOR.

People seem to heavily underestimate GW2 and Arenanet, I'll never have any idea why.

and he clearly has an agenda against almost all rival MMORPGs.

I just dont play, nor like crap games. SWTOR is looking like a blatant WoWclone, we have seen enough of those already and they hardly ever do well.

There's also millions of followers for GW2, much more anticipated then a Star Wars game.

People just wont understand, nor recognize how hugely successful GW1 and Arenanet actually are compared to MMOs other than WoW.

The fact that it's BioWare and is the next game in The Knights of the Old Republic

GW1 alone is massively bigger than any game that Bioware have ever released. And Dragon Age II was great wasnt it?.

Bioware also have no experience whatsoever in the MMO industry, this is the first one they are making, and their approach is simply to copy the old and boring gameplay from WoW, and whatever it was that existed before then. Arenanet on the other hand are constantly pushing forward Online RPG innovation, creating ideas and games that are radically different to anything else out there, and focusing on ironing out the flaws of the traditional MMO while implementing gameplay features that their already huge fanbase actually enjoy.

2.) It's Star Wars, I've heard the brand is kind of popular.

The film is very popular yes. None of the Star Wars games so far, in terms of sales figures have been anywhere close to impressive.

That wikipedia list looks quite questionable. Plus it includes all the expansions as part of the game so the total amount of purchases is nowhere near that figure

Actually GW1 surpassed the 7 million+ sales point earlier this year, recent sales simply havnt yet been added to the official figures. GW1 also only has 1 expansion, and 3 seperate stand alone games.

Yet people on this forum act like Guild Wars is like some minor, completely unheard of game compared to anything that Bioware have ever created

Meh, and I missed the most obvious point - GW no fees, SWTOR fees. The market for new fee based MMOs is tiny due to WoW still going strong with over 10 million subs. Barely any other fee based MMO has had any success since WoW because the vast majority of people who pay fees are unwilling to play anything but WoW, and most of the others have had to go FTP.

I refuse to call GW1 an MMO : it was an online co-op rpg. The only benefit the game had was that it was f2p. I perfonally found the original extremely boring. Graphically the new one looks superb and I will more then likely end up purchasing it.

However this isnt the first star wars MMO. Star wars galaxies was massivly successful untill a patch comepletly ruined it. Bioware will have been assessing all the pros and cons of the old game.

But anyways im not going to troll this thread like Bhavvy did the wow mop thread. In answer to your question OP id be suprised if we see it before april time of next year.
