40+40x0+1 =

Without wanting to insult thick people, how can people not know BODMAS?

It's pre-GCSE maths! I've filled my head with a lot of **** since then, but even I can still remember it!

I'm quite old now, I did O level maths and when I was in the sixth form I did a year of A level maths before I left.

BODMAS means nothing to me. I've never heard that term before, or if I have then I really don't remember it. I find it quite offensive the way people are being insulting in this thread.

I looked at it, did the calculation from left to right and came up with 1. Now if the 40x0 were in brackets then it would have been a different matter.

Helicopter on a turntable?

Considering it's to do with the outward centripetal force of the prop cancelling out the effect of mavity on the mass of the craft (aka weight), probably yes. But it depends on directions, and the helicopter could be thrown off before they go up to speed :p

This isn't advanced maths... Order of operations is covered at Key Stage 3 (11-14)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/maths/number/order_operation/revise2.shtml

As for why not put the brackets in, there's no need, you are not altering the default order of operations so you don't need them to get the correct result. The only reason to put them in is to deal with people who don't understand maths.

They'd have been taught before GCSE, that's the point.

Well I must have been bunking off, scoring loads of young, tight teenage poontang. Hope you enjoyed your maths classes :p

It's a real shame that not knowing 40+40x0+1=41 :o Never mind - I can still work out how much change you need, or the VAT content of a purchase. I'm even able to split a meal bill - and not even the same amount of people each time

They probably were, because my parents remembering being taught the standard order of operations. Perhaps you just didn't pay attention?

Also, even if you were not taught something does not mean you're allowed to fill the void with complete bull and claim it as 'fact' because in your own narrow understanding of the subject, you believe it to be true.

See my above post.

You also fail to realise that anything I say is fact is just that. Fact. <--FACT

Just saying like. Enjoy your non deity life ;)

I did GCSE maths more than 20 years ago and was taught BODMAS.

I got taught this in PRIMARY school in the other side of the world in Hong Kong in another language.

Either Quink missed that class or he failed maths.

Either way, Quink is wrong.

This is like 1 + 1 = 2.

How on earth this get to 3 pages is beyond me. I thought maths 20 years ago was harder? lol Clearly not!
