what did you do for work experience at school?

I spent 2 weeks working at the local skate park for my trident, duties included sweeping, fixing ramps and the best bit of all testing them :D

Worked at a company called Britax, did office work, sat in on some designers designing wing mirror brackets (entertaining), IT stuff, worked reception for a bit. All in all, a big hodgepodge of stuff.

I had arranged a week in the BT call centre but never went...

I lay in bed for an entire week doing nothing and somehow I got a certificate at the end of it to say I had been, so in the end got away with it :D

I worked in a factory that made leather belts. I only picked this place because my sister worked there. It was o.k. and i went out on the friday with most of them and got drunk. I got paid by the owner (£50) for the 2 weeks and i was offered a job for when i finished school. I thanked him but declined the job as i had higher aspirations. The first leather belt i made was given to me as a gift and i still use the same belt every day (this belt is now 21 years old!).

I wasn't too far away from the OP!

In the 4th year (year 10 they call it nowadays) in July 1994, I spent the first week at Crochet Quaver, the music shop in Kiddy. Did a bit of office work, errand boy type stuff, made the drinks. Tuned some of the instruments in their upstairs storage area. Best thing about it was being able to mess around on their high-end keyboards / synthesisers on the shop floor. Second week was spent at the Zap Club in Brighton as my uncle used to run it, so go figure. Spent day time in their Zap office, fairly normal office work. Fax machine, photocopying, word processing etc. At night time, I was able to control the lights.

In the 6th form, May 1996, I spent a week at a local recording studio, again, close to Kiddy.

Kiddy = Kidderminster for non-locals :p

crochet quaver? never heard of it. only music shops i remember were our price and magpie. where was it?
the only recording studio i knew of was out clee hill way, i have a friend who did work experience there.

Ahhh CM1179, I'm taking about a shop that sells musical instruments, sheet music, synthesisers and so on.

ahh got ya. it's probably not there anymore, whole top end of town wants flattening tbh. in 1994 it was doing very well, even had a waitrose and laser quest once. now even mcdonalds has jumped ship from that side of the centre. **** hole lol.

actually, seeing your link, i think that may be where my brother gets his guitars serviced. i know it's somewhere in kiddy, not sure where though

and also a military base is wierd as I didn't know who to salute so sometimes an officer would walk past and everyone would salute but I didn't. Bizarre.

Unless they were in civilians surely they would've had their rank insignia's on their tops. And from being in the air cadets you should've known what ranks are what and therefor who you needed to salute?!
Freind's have been in ATC, OTC's and brother was in the TA and they knew who to salute even visiting officers! Experienced from the times they had "performances" (for want of a better) in public and I hung around afterwards. Or times I visited with them to their training bases.

Thanks buddy. Yes, I was brought up near Bridgnorth which is why I know Kiddy. Since I've lived in Stafford 1998 onwards, I've not been around there much, only B'north area regularly to see my parents, so I didn't know about that end of Kiddy town going to pot.

I spent 2 weeks doing general computer stuff at Compaq. It was a realistic introduction into the working world of sitting there and feeling useless. I did get to go to the InfoSec show in London though, which was interesting.

I worked in the local PC repair store. was pretty entertaining already knew how to put a PC together at the time so got to help out doing that, or playing games on some of the show PC's :P

I worked for a company that provides training to army wives.... basically admin training, word processing, book keeping stuff like that.
It ranged from making the teas, to filing, to doing mailshots, to going shopping at the NAAFI, to designing a new leaflet for one of their courses (which they ended up using!).

Didn't get paid for it and thought it was a complete waste of time. Was really annoying hearing about other people getting paid etc, even if it was 'only' £50 or whatever. I think the teachers were quite shocked at my attitude afterwards, they were expecting everyone who didn't want to do it would come back after two weeks and be won over. I just said I'd rather have been studying for my GCSEs.

Looking back now I think they could have done more to get me thinking about where I wanted to go, they just pinned up jobs on a board and you would go and claim the one you wanted. I didn't want to do it so left it until the end so got lumbered with this job, all I could really say was I wanted to work in an office rather than in a menial type job.

I spent mine in the local college's workshops as a general dog's body. To make matters worse, every other day they had the little ***** in who'd been excluded from school doing workshop for some reason, so I had to put up with their crap.

I was supposed to have gone to a firm at Manchester Airport called FLS Aerospace. A mate of mine got himself a place there, and asked if there were another. As his dad worked in Manchester city centre, getting there wouldn't have been a problem. However, all I needed was a letter from my head of year authorising me to go. I kept asking her, and kept getting fobbed off with "I'll do it tomorrow" Lo and behold, the place goes, and I get sent to the college just to get me out of the way. My mate who did go to FLS spent the two weeks assisting in overhauling a Monarch 757-200, and even got to sit in the cockpit jumpsit while it was test-flown. Lucky *******! :(

Worked for a small company producing control panels, some of which I helped build went to Golden Wonder and BOC.

Was good fun and with a great bunch of guys, and got paid £30 a week.
