Battlefield 3 tips & tricks

Parachute doesn’t work unless the drop is higher than a two-story building. If less you will receive fall damage.

Tanks take double damage from rear hits so aim there. Tank drivers under fire, position the front of your tank in the direction of the oncoming fire or move to try and dodge it.

Repair tool can also damage vehicles. Its slow but sometimes you can do enough damage to disable the tank as the driver is expecting damage in the form of incoming fire.

Recon radio beacon creates a spawn point which your team can use to spawn. Very useful but I don’t see if being used enough.

Engineer mines: very effective. Try and plant them in bottleneck areas and try and plant them near debris/rubble to make them blend in.

Before diving out of cover take a second to look around and hit ‘q’. This will let you spot enemies and make it easier to plan your attack.

Shotguns have the ability to gain scopes, while it doesn't help the range all that much the non zooms help with aiming the shot and the longer ones are great for recon (since you can fire from the hip)

Two Stingers fired at the same time seem to disable a chopper every time.

When playing Conquest and you are dead waiting to spawn, cycle around all the flags you have possession of. Look at the graphic of each flag and see if its moving up or down, this will tell you that something is happening at the flag, ie its being taken or was under attack, spawn at this flag.

Scopes are not always a good thing, even the reflex (Non zoom) scope. A scope can limit your view as opposed to ironsights.

Flashlights can blind the enemy but they can also blind your team mates (same with lasers), keep that in mind and try and keep your flashlight pointed below head height when near friendlies and stop shining it in my face! Press ‘t’ to turn it off.

Most vehicles have a turbo option ‘SHIFT’. Jets have afterburner and tanks/jeeps have turbo. This will allow you to travel much faster and there is no cooldown on it.

Tanks: Get the thermal vision. Use it.

I think only scopes above 6x zoom glint?

The second co-op mission is great for practicing flying attack choppers/manning the gunner's seat.

Alternative tip for learning to fly the chopper: Play on an empty server for BF2. The mechanics are almost identical. Only difference is that you have to invert the mouse in BF3, and I think the chopper is a tiny bit more sluggish in BF3. Jets are very similar too.

Recon have a piece of equipment called a T-ugs which is great to keep near a flag (out of sight) as it shows up most enemies, a great gadget.

Shout: "Enemy boat spotted" on maps with no boats. ;)

Good post :)

You are doing it wrong. ;)

My only tip is, turn off your CPU overclocks of you have them, especially AMD owners. Bizarre as it sounds, the game runs smoother and with a higher framerate when I go back to stock (3.4Ghz) from my 4Ghz oc.

And turning off Aero WORKS wonders. Best tip so far.

Lol, why'd you quote me then post something completly unrelated?
I don't suffer framerate issues just keybindings and level 23 retards (after only 2 days?) nerfing me or half decent pilots raping the whole damned map.

Id hazard a guess that thats the gun that has killed me the most. Also tried the irnv scope, makes the game so easy i actually felt guilty using it.:D Id say though that it does need to be nerfed for daylight use.

+1 Nerfed for daylight use please.

I got my first jet unlocks after laying mines on the road at caspian border then someone run them over while i was flying. It counted the points and kills toward my jet score instead of engineer.

Spot as much as you can, it helps team mates.

If you're support, drop ammo.

If you're assault, drop medi kits.

If you're engineer either lay mines, or repair vehicles.

Can't give a tip for Recon as I don't play it.

I fly choppers quite a lot and my advice...

Kill their chopper first if it's safe to engage... then aa. When i take off first thing i do is spot the chopper in the hope our jet pilots will keep him distracted. Get higher than him and proceed to rape face.
If you don't have a gunner don't take on enemy chopper head on, get drop on him like above.

Killing Mobile AA without a gunner is tricky, AA like to sit on hills where they have good view of the battlefield. I keep spotting from a distance till i find him, get high enough to have time to switch to gunner position, launch tv missle and it usually 1 shots them/

If you spot enemy chopper approaching you from a distance, nice trick is to hover on the up slope of a hill. With below radar you can lock him but he can't lock you, need pretty good control to pull it off though....

Jets are more of a nuicance than a real threat, they can't take you down in one pass unless they catch you hovering and get their aim spot on. Once i realise i'm being shot from a jet i drop altitude and look at radar to work work out where i need to be facing to see them once they pass me. Then lock them with air to air and watch them run

Perkwise i'm still not 100% decided on the gunner but for pilot air radar and flare are essential imo

Random Crashing

Another set of tips from myself.
some gained from my many hours spent supporting customers, others gained from my incessant battle to get BF3 stable on my system.

BF3 Crashes randomly on my system and goes into a sound loop.
If like me you are getting random crashing, ensure that if you have an Asus Xonar sound card that you have GX mode DISABLED.

overlay programs and punkbuster
Afterburner and other 'overlay' programs such as fraps and rivatuner based clocking utilities like evga precision are notorious for messing up with punkbuster.

download the latest version of pb setup and keep it updated, chances are it will be out of date.

DX Runtime update
Update your DirectX end user runtime. This will ensure you aren't flogging a dead horse if you run into issues.

Repair Battlefield 3
If your game is randomly crashing, repair the game – it will install an update which will resolve the issues that cause these crashes.
go to origin and right click on your install. Repair the game, this can help solve random crashing issues.

Stu-tt-er-in-g?
there is an issue with HyperThreading causing stuttering in game. disable HT until DICE patch the game to fix

If you are bedding in for a session on a particular server, once you are in game you can close down both Origin and your browser which will free up CPU processes / GPU Vram / RAM. You can remain on the same server for as long as you like without these running. Also closing down any other apps (like Steam) will also make a difference. This coupled with the disabling Aero trick makes the experience considerably better.

Once I have done this, how does one get his nice looking windows back ? After exiting the game Im left with a UI that looks like windows 3.1

Your tip defiantly works and i get a bit of vram back, thank you very much.

Anyone worked a way round this yet please?

You need to exit Origin altogether, i.e. shut it down in the taskbar after it says it is still running.

Anyone worked a way round this yet please?

Here's my contribution/tip/workaround for those that want to enable/disable Aero quickly.
Open notepad, wordpad or whatever text editor you use and copy/paste the following:
Code:
call wmic /locale:ms_409 service where (name="uxsms") get state /value | findstr State=Running
if %ErrorLevel% EQU 0 (
    echo Stopping Aero...
    net stop uxsms
) else (
    echo Starting Aero...
    net start uxsms
)

Save wherever you like, ideally somewhere easily accessible (or create a shortcut to it on your desktop). Double clicking the icon will toggle Aero. Change the icon to something prettier if you wish, and optionally pin it to the start menu/task bar or assign a keyboard shortcut.

I think for Tank my best perks were Thermal Vision, Proximity scanner and LMG - sat in the tunnels at Damavand and racked up about 60 kills for about 5 deaths! Helped I had an engineer repairing when needed....
