Had Fibre Optics installed this morning

Nice, lucky if I get 1Mb. This superfast stuff is all well and good for the headlines but they need to get the whole country up to a more modest 8Mb first. As it seems with BT Infinity a lot of people don't even want 40Mb, I'd have it in a second but I'm not really representative of the majority ;)

God damn I would love to unleash that on usenet, were you a pre-existing Kcom customer?

Lol... ya, that upstream is absolutely pathetic.

I live on the edge of the Hull area where there's no BT line available and all you've got is KC and Karoo. I was on a standard Karoo package.

There's been 3 /4 / 5 KC vans in the area for nearly a month and they've even replaced the telegraph poles with sturdier ones to feed fibre overhead to houses that don't have underground connections. It's staggering how much they must have spent on this little village of 50 odd houses.

The engineer came round for an hour today. He offered to feed the fibre into the house anywhere I wanted. Fitted an Ericsson modem to the wall and gave me a brand new Netgear WNR3500L to play with. All this for no extra cost and I was told the trial would last at least 6 months before they announce their fibre optic packages officially. Oh, and he said my download limits no longer count and could I use it as much as I can to test the line.

Yeah, it's been a good day!

edit:

Lol, small test, loaded up 3 sky go windows high quality and iPlayer with my wife surfing on her laptop and not a stutter.

Oh, and my phone was downloading a podcast.

This was over wifi as well which I think is definately going to be the bottleneck now. Well, that and the souce.

So after the test what's it going to be?

I'm not sure. They're planning on rolling this out to 15000 homes within a year or two so I'm presuming the cost isn't going to be too prohibitive and heck for this speed I'll pay whatever they want anyway, actually they could even take my eldest child.

very impressive :)

EDIT:

i ran this from the cad lab last year when i was living on campus

If Carlsberg made internet connections!!!

Do you use usenet at all? Would be good to see what constant speed you get with a decent provider.

+2 for usenet. This will be the ultimate test, I want to see how many connections you Would need to use to hit all that bandwidth or if you really don't need to use all of the connections providers offer.

I had the same dilema when i got bt's fttp i get about 88mbs and use all my bandwidth on astraweb, use ssl to stop throttling. Torrents was no good at all. Deffo recommend newsgroups!!

+1 for usenet

Ok. Now I use to occasionally use newsgroups 10 or so years ago but having had really really poor internet for so long I'm well out the loop.

Are there some good resources for me to start with? I've downloaded Grabit? any good? but it's asked me for preferred usenet server and I've no idea...

Holy Moly. Decided to try a torrent.
