****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

I desperately need a new smart phone I feel like I am living in the dark ages with my blackberry

After doing some research it’s come down to 2 choices the Galaxy S2 or the iPhone 4S 32GB

Ideally I would like the iPhone as I’ve used my mate’s one extensively and it seems nice enough but £599 for the sim free 32GB is just too much.
Technically I can afford it but then i feel like I’m being ripped off and am being charged more and getting a lot less (compared to the Galaxy s2)

The Galaxy S2 16GB + a 32 GB SD card will only cost me £430

I spend a lot of time on the train going to work and the main thing I want from the phone is video playback and web browsing

Due to the Galaxy S2 having a larger screen and more file format support for videos I guess it wins in that department but then I would like to play some games as well and it seems the iPhone wins that one easily

But there is one thing i would like the Galaxy S2 owners to confirm
Been reading the amazon user review section for the Galaxy S2 and one review which 650 people found helping has gotten me concerned

1. If you use your phone as your primary music player (e.g. like an iPod) then this is NOT the phone for you - it (as far as I can determine) has no dedicated hardware to decode audio and so it uses a lot of CPU power to play music. The phone will get very hot in your pocket from the CPU heat and within 4 hours the battery will be completely dead. This turned out to be a deal breaker for me as I use my phone extensively for music playback, and the iPhone is still the only phone I know of that gives 40 hours playback.

Can anyone confirm if this is true or not

I won’t use my phone as my primary music player but I will like to play music on it sometimes (while browsing) and if it’s true that it can drain the battery down in 4 hours then that’s quite poor imo

Can anyone help
I would like to buy the phone today or tomorrow

That music example sounds rather extreme and I can't say I've ever noticed that happening.

For video playback, I'd rather have the Galaxy S II screen (and playback support) than the iPhone screen, but for everything else you've suggested the iPhone would be the better option, especially as it's the phone you'd ideally like; plenty of people tend to regret not getting one in your situation.

Got the official MHL cable through the post this morning. I have a problem though, Wifi doesn't seem to want to work at all when it is all connected up, But Data Network works perfectly.

Anyone got any idea?

I've not played music continuously for 4 hours, but after an hour or so I've not noticed an problems or excessive battery drain. Sounds like an exaggeration. However I doubt it would even get close to 40hours playback... It struggles to get through 2 days with basic usage.

You may have the problem i had a few pages back.

The SGS2 is the clear winner for what you want out of a phone. And that amazon review you mentioned is utter tripe and no such problem exists.

Having owned an iP4 for over a year, and currently owning an S2 for a few months, I would say the S2 all the way. The 4S although being better then the 4, is not worth almost £200 more then the S2.

Also Sem, I recently picked up a spare battery for under £10 and keep it fully charged in my wallet. It comes in so so handy! I can rinse my phone out all day without any worry whatsoever about conserving battery life, its a 2 second job to swap batteries and I'm good to go again. :)

I read your post, Both your WIFI & Data get cut off though. Only the WIFI does on mine, I can still use data network as well as receive calls & texts. Also mine is the official cable not 3rd party.

Did you manage to fix it though?

Just got mine... LOVE IT so far...

Just managed to sync all my iphone contacts over which saved me a lot of time.

Now trying out iSyncR for the first time, hopefully it works as well as im hoping... (syncs music with itunes)

with screen off with no calls, text or data maybe, or you've got a super battery.

Well yeah, I was talking about battery when listening to music, not when using the phone for other stuff :p.

It wouldn't really be a relevant comparison if I were to browse the web while listening to music when just talking about using the phone as a music player, would it? :p

No, but you say it like listening to music whilst browsing the web, and making/receiving a call inbetween is something totally alien:p

I was just checking:p

Today on the train i saw someone playing fifa on their iphone
it looked pretty damn good

IOS has some very nice games and apps and that's what's really making the choice difficult for me

but then again i can always get a 8GB ipod touch for my ios fix

8gb ipod + SGS2 is still cheaper than a 32gb 4S

but then again carrying 2 devices around isnt the best solution

yeah guess a spare battery is not a bad idea if they are small enough
if i do get a galaxy then i will 100% get that 2000mAh battery and then keep the stock as a spare in my bag/wallet
