It's 10 quid a month! I'm sure you can afford 3 less drinks a month at the pub if the internet issue is causing you such a big deal?

Infact if you use less data its probably even less than 10 quid a month. Do you have a half decent phone? You could probably just tether that using your existing service plan!

I don't go out drinking :p Most of my money is spent on food so I can eat every week, or rent, or travel.

I have a Nokia C3 on PAYG

Just how poor is your internet, I am assuming its broadband. Can you run a speed check?

Maybe hes blocked anything that he thinks will consume bandwidth and that you may use as its a really poor connection.

On a speedtest website it came out as Ping: 245ms DL Speed: 0.11mbps UL Speed: 0.06mbps

How can you live with that kind of speed.

With a 3G dongle you will definitely get 10x faster than that.

Dongle is sounding more and more like the option I might have to go for! I live with it by not going on youtube and websites with a lot of photos or gifs D: Luckily I am at my dads for four days every fortnight, and he has lovely internet

That's not real speed it's clearly being throttled by a connection(s).

Is there a better website? I know there was another one but I can't remember what it was called!

Seriously get a grip - he pays for the internet connection and you use it - he probably has some parental controls set up which is blocking bits and bobs in a generic manner - why do you go with your list of sites you want to see and get him to open it up?

If the bloke refuses then get a dongle - 23 and you carnt afford £10 a month? Then you seriously need to look at your priotrities in life and either increase your imcome or work out whats important

So what if he pays for it? I pay for mine and I let everyone in the house use it I even turn my downloads off for Xbox live and I only get 2meg. How do you know they don't already have other priorities I don't force anyone to use a dongle.

No, I 'carnt' afford £10 a month. I have an unlucky run with jobs, only been able to get Christmas jobs, plus I am currently in full time education. I have already spoken to him about it and he won't do anything, which I stated earlier in the thread.

So increasing my income won't happen just yet and working out what's important, well, I am pretty sure I'd like to eat first, so I won't be paying for a dongle just yet

Thank you :)

He has several routers in his study, wouldn't know which one was which to be honest :o

And I am on wlan0 driver is ath5k says on the connection info speed it 11 MB/s

Can't really afford a tenner a month on internet at the moment otherwise I would have gotten my own :( Plus, I am not sure about dongles, I have always heard negative things about them? I am in a poor internet area anyways

Portsmouth? That city is littered with excellent HSDPA reception all over!

Yes and as the owner of that connection you share it with everyone else in the house - because YOU have that choice. The OP doesnt own that line and her step dad has his own rules - some would agree with them - some wouldnt, but if the OP cannot have that discussion about opening up sites then she has to get her own internet connection - and in this case it looks like £10 a month for a dongle

When it comes to money then everything comes down to priorities, add internet to the list and see how high it really is - if she carnt afford it then the reality is she carnt afford it - so up your income or spend less on something else

You obviously missed my point, being that he is an *** and I'm not because I don't control people so speaking to him is useless. Internet is very high on the list it's 2011 not 1999. Having an internet connection actually saves me money.

OK I dont care if the bloke is nice as pie or and ****. Its his connection - you either use HIS connection with HIS rules or you get YOUR connection and make YOUR own rules up.

If having Internet saves you money then £10 a month is a bargain - go get one tomorrow and worry about something else
