Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

Don't forget that it is in the interest of HD makers to create hysteria and panic.
If I were in charge of Seagate, I too, would be telling the press that HD production is going to be low for many years. This also helps Seagate justify their higher wholesale pricing.

Be patient guys...prices will come down in a few months, once the panic buyers have all dried up.

Well said. I remember reading that worldwide production of drives will only be down something like 30%, the price is artificially high at the moment due to speculators, the true demand/supply price will be far more easily stomached.

I've found a site that has Western Digital Digital Caviar Black 1TB (7200rpm) SATA 6Gb/s 64MB 3.5 inch for £73.25 inc VAT and has almost 700 units in stock. Never heard of the site before though, so I'm a bit suspicious. What do you think?

If it goes bad and I've paid with my credit card, I can always get my money back off the credit card company right?

They look legit, checked them out on Companies House and they've been going since 1993.

Well I just went to checkout and I'm getting an error on both paypal and credit card payment. Maybe we're looking at a different site?

Same one I reckon. Reload it, both the paypal checkout and credit card processing things are through paypal so that could be why they're throwing up an error.

I've changed browser and now it wants my cc details :) Now I'm wondering if I should get a 2TB rather than the 1TB I was planning on getting?

There's only a few pounds in it, so I went for the 2TB ones.

Still 50% more what they were though, I could do with a 2TB but not desperate enough to pay those fees yet :D

Very true, I was extremely butthurt over it all because I was about to buy some drives as they went up in price, but these prices are much better, I've basically got them for half the going rate currently at other places and I'm in "desperate" need of more storage for my file server.

True, but still 50% cheaper than what's mostly on the market atm and I need a new HDD, I have no choice.

Same for me. I've got a 4x 1TB Dynamic Drive setup on my file server that's going really dodgy, I don't think there's anything wrong with the drives themselves but the array keeps dissappearing from windows and only re-appears after a few reboots, so I need to get some new storage so I can transfer the contents of the 4x 1TB drives and then split them back in to individual drives.

Fair enough as they're fairly reasonably priced on that site to what's about mostly everywhere else, then yes I'd say it's a good idea to get the 2 x 2TB at the current price.

My OCZ 600w Mod Extreme PSU blew on me a couple of weeks ago and took my Samsung 1TB HDD with it :( Unfortunately the supplier would only refund £36 of the original price and would not issue a replacement, so in the current HDD climate I've got away lightly with the £73. I went with the 1TB WD Caviar Black in the end as they have the best performance over Green and Blue and also have a 5 year warranty, whereas the Green and Blue have less performance and a 3 year warranty. I've had WD's before and their warranty service is most excellent.

Just learnt a hard lession (Make sure you backup data) as 2 of my 1TB drives failed me
;-(

Sent one back to Seagate but they are refusing to replace it (it was one I ripped out of an external enclosure from Iomega but had forgotten that).

Luckily I've just managed to get 2x 2TB Seagate External drives for £79.99 - both have been shipped. - This time I will remember to put them back in the enclosure should they fail me again!

And now I have set up Raid to minimise data loss.

Recently I sold a 2TB and 2x 750gb as I thought I had enough space then at the weekend I install a new mobo and both my samsung 1TB go click click click and wont work so just my luck that prices are high as Im needing to replace them :(

These Samsung 1TB's are terrible, I've read quite a few reports of F3's dying and had one die myself a couple of weeks ago, and today I had another one clicking on me although touch wood it's still going!

I could really do with a couple of 2TB drive and maybe another 1TB but I'm trying my best to hold out until prices become reasonable.
