Guys

Let’s say for example my company wanted me to be on call from -

Monday - Friday - 5PM > 8:30PM

Saturday - 8:30AM > 8:30PM
Sunday - 8:30AM > 8:30PM

It would be to provide a helpdesk / remote assistance to resolve the issue or pass onto the relevant hardware support desk. What kind of money do people generally earn to be on call like this?. I’m guessing you would get an "on call" fee and then you would get paid per call answered / dealt with.

Cheers

Nobody can answer this question because every company has a different on call policy.

You could get paid by the hour, by the call, by the week for every week on call etc.

Answer? Ask the company in question.

Wrong answer ... ;)

This is new for my company, hence why I’m asking other peoples experience’s to get an idea. OK peoples job roles are different and therefor command different premiums however it will still be handy to get some sort of idea as at the moment i dont have a clue.

Im thinking for me to even be arsed to go on call id want £200 per week + fee per call handled

My guys get paid by the hour and then time and a half (normal overtime rate) if called out.

[edit]£200 a week for being on call is very little.

£3.07 for a normal day/saturday and £4.09 for a sunday. Equates to around £400 a week without being called out.

How often would your week of on-call come around?

Correct, it would vary per company. You really should speak to your boss and someone from HR to discuss the terms of your on call.

Where I am at the moment I get a nightly rate for being primary, then a weekly rate for being on backup for that week. I also claim per hour for anything actually worked. So the same as what you describe more or less.

How big is your company anyway? Are there any other areas of IT/your company that operate out of hours support? How do they do it, and is there any one you can talk to about it?

I'm usually on a strict 9-5 day however when servers go down or the like and I'm called out to deal with it after hours I get time and a 1/2 mon-sat but for sundays or Bank Holidays double!

I'm on call one week in four for the following hours

Monday to Friday 10pm to 6am
Friday 10pm to Monday 6am

I also need to do around 2-3 hours work on a Sat and Sun morning included.

I get £500 for that as a flat rate.

£208 for the backup week, £29 for the primary day on rotation (can't be claimed if already on backup).

Gonna have a little cry now.

Flat rates as a percentile are to be avoided. The business can increase your amount of on-call without paying you more for it :)

It's a problem we had some time ago.

That might sound like a good deal, but it isn't. How do they contact you OOH?

we get a fixed rate for being on call, then 1.5x overtime for sat and 2x for sunday and BH for any work done in 15 min blocks.

Wow, my company gives 1 hour standard wage each day for being on call, 1.5 at weekends, which equates to an extra days' pay for a full week of on-call evenings.

When taking calls or being called out during these evenings, the time taken is charged at time and a half in addition.

Fair enough, if you're happy with that. I think they're taking advantage of you TBF.

Probably, but hey I was just happy to get the Job at the time I did this was back when the original recessions effects were just kicking in I'd just dropped out o uni and loads of people were being Laid off at the time. I was lucky I got the offer let alone the Job!

Where I work it's as follows:

Mon-Fri 6pm-6am £50
Sat/Sun 6pm-6am £75

Then whenever there is a call you got double time for any hour that call goes into. I.e. a two minute call running fro 1:59-2:01 would pay two hours at double time. Also the time spent in calls is how late you can come in the next day, i.e. 2 hour call you come in 2 hours late still paid.
