Why do people 'crack' their knuckles?

I can also do it with my knees if I bend them and sink down, that tends to freak people out!

Both my knees do it every time I sink down and kinda sqaut. Only does it once and then will be some hours before it does it again but it freaks people out as it is so loud and sounds like my legs breaking. :D

No idea why they do it but it won't cause arthritis or any other issues for them when they're older. The 'cracking' is simply air in the fluid that surrounds the joint being compressed and popping.

It causes absolutely no harm apart from the obvious annoyance to everybody else!

My colleague does it all the time... and it really annoys me.
It sounds horrible and I don't think he realises that he's doing it.

Isn't it bad for your bones?

They know their doing it, it's a bad habit that their use to.

It isn't particuarly bad for you're bones though, but I too use to think it was!

It used to be a habit of mine and I just couldn't help it. My fingers are now very thin and some are slightly bent due to cracking the end of my fingertips all the time. Really regret it.

Cracking of your fingertips?

I crack my knuckles mainly out of habit. Sometimes they feel as though they "need" cracked though. My chest also cracks if I stretch it out.
