Hey

I have started working 5 weeks ago and I've got my first pay today which is very low (nearly two times less than i was supposed to get)

I'm am guessing that they have over charged me with tax and NI but i can't be sure about that

the job is part time and temporary for me until i find something in IT

I worked - 66hrs in total through the 5 week period and i get paid £6.43 an hour

now i don't work more than 16hrs PER week and don't earn more than a £100 a week

so what was my pay after 66hrs? £213quid

which averages around 3quid an HOUR ffs.

i will be getting my pay slip tomorrow(hopefully) and ill see how much insurance/tax they have deducted

or it was a big mistake at the work place.

if they have overcharged me can i actually get the money back ASAP or not?

yearly amount to earn before paying tax is - £7,475(i will only be earning half as much)

weekly works out at £139(i don't earn that either)

help me out! thanks

:(

You're on basic rate, you needed to give them your P45 when you started and for them to action on it.

If not, ring the tax office:

Taxes Helpline
Please have your National Insurance number with you when you phone
Opening hours
8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday

Tell them you're on the wrong taxcode and they'll amend it.. and by that, they'll email your company a tax code thinger which they then sort out and you should get a copy of your new tax code. Just remember... your company still has to actually do something to get it done.

Took me 7months to get mine sorted.. and yes I did do something about it, every payday until it was fixed. Took me three p46s (or what ever the one I had to fill out) and 4 phone calls to change my code!

erf. BR tax code more than likely...You'll see it on your pay check :(

Just inform HR or whoever is incharge of the money in your place

Something isn't right there. 66 * £6.43 = £424.38

The thresholds for both tax and NIC are about £600, so you shouldn't be paying anything. Hell, even on BR tax and standard NIC you shouldn't be seeing less than about £280.

If they have overpaid your tax or NI, then speak to payroll first to see if they can sort it out. If they can't call your tax office.

the funny thing is i don't have my p45 as i've just finished college last education year and been looking for my first proper job since then(i have worked in temp placements before but never had my p45 given to me)

thanks for advice! ill have to sort it out tomorrow once i have my pay slip and ill see where the problem is.

i can say it is really annoying specially before xmas :(

Going to speak with the payroll tomorrow and see what they say :)

I was chatting with one guy a few days ago(been working there for 2 years) and he works 8hrs per week yet gets paid £250P/M so something is obviously wrong in my case.

Thanks.

You may also benefit from completing a P46, if you do not have a P45.

If you're being paid monthly, it sounds like they are using the code D1 (50%) which will give you a net pay of 212.38. No NI deductions will come off £424.38.

yeah seems like they took 50% of my pay.. :/ come tomorrow! we'll see what they say

It does suck and you won't see that money until next payday unless you can have them sub it to you.. I'm not sure of the law on giving you owed money though that'll be another thread :)

Could be to do with the days that their monthly payroll runs between. They may pay you in arrears therefore this pay day was for any hours worked between 1st-31st October.

i worked between 19th oct and to 24th november - the payday is always 26th or the closest work day this time it was friday.. so i worked full month + some extra :|
will suck if i have to wait till the next pay day :(

Regardless of when you worked, I find it seriously hard to understand why they are taking 50% tax off you? If an employee starts work, and does not complete a P46 or forward a P45, the code 0T should be used on a Week/Month 1 basis (which will be 20%)

Keep us updated, would love to know why they have done that.

yeah it odd.. 50% is a lot from that pay and from any pay tbh.. :/

It could be that the tax office still think you are registered with a previous temp job, especially given the lack of P45, so this effectively is a second job to them.

The same happened to me some years back when I was suddenly taxed nearly all my pay, because they thought I was still employed in some bar job I had years ago.

well my last proper job was 2007 - been studying full time :| would they actually keep the records for that long? :/

I would guess your not being paid for the period you think you are.

Payroll depts often cut off at least a week before actual pay is made.

Could well be your getting 3 weeks pay with emergency tax, or something similar

could be :/ ill see what my payslip says

Im in a similar situation, started a temporary part time job in retail about a month ago, only 23 hours at £7.40/hr, and while this was my 2nd job this financial year, i've still earnt less then £7k overall, but have been getting taxed the full 20% as im on the OT taxcode. Spoke to the admin team and they said takes a few weeks to correct itself, but I handed in my notice couple days ago so only got few more days left (retail is not for me) so will wait till I finish then call up HMRC to get a refund.
