*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

And where exactly did I say that I didn't do that in Rift?

Simple concept really... other than voice acting, (so far, from what I've experienced) they've not done anything different to any other MMO imo. There see, not hard to understand at all ;)
Although I should point out I never did actually say it's the same as any other MMO... I just said the questing was standard MMO fodder; which it is!

what were you expecting? Wow, lotro, rift it's all the same. People sound surprised when they have to go do that.

How do you work out the ping while in game?

Can anyone login yet? Still down here.

Edit: Never mind, I keep forgetting what time zone I'm in... :D :(

I have yet to be given a kill X of Y quest except as an optional component of a proper quest with a backstory and a plot. That's a really impressive part of the game for me. I like the light side / dark side choice, adds a bit of variety.

Question - what happens if you choose dark side conversation options as a republic player?

The voice acting is nice, and I can't believe other MMO's haven't done it.. but I guess it boils down to expense, and a deliverable game.. as this game ages if they keep up the voice acting/cinematics it's going to grow to HUUUUGE proportions... previously that'd have been almost impossible for customers to keep up with in terms of downloads.

Everquest2.

I have to say, the hour I played last night it seemed like a well polished MMO, however it just felt so generic, really didn't drag me in at all and I cannot see me paying to play it whatsoever.

**UPDATE 3:40AM CST (9:40 London, 10:40 Paris/Berlin) - Maintenance has been extended until 4:30AM CST (10:30 London, 11:30 Paris/Berlin)**

So still nearly an hour to go.

I'm really enjoying this, I'm a touch disappointed but I think thats because not all my friends got on the same server.

The orange pixel is doing my head in, I thought my new monitor had a dead pixel !!!

quick question for those of you who have some experience on the PvP servers if you dont mind...

Ive read the description of PvP servers, and the planetary restrictions (no PvP on starters and capitals). Other than this, how similar is the game to Ultima Online pre:trammel? - ie; if you are not in a safe area or on one of those planets, are you fair game?

secondly, what proportion of leveling needs to take place in the open pvp environment? - or do you level to 50 via the storyline instanced stuff?

Did I say that I was expecting anything different? No!.. I've played enough MMO's to realise that it's basically not going to happen.. until someone releases a truely sandbox style of play.

Yet still there are people who fall for the hype.. and lets face it I doubt there's been an MMO release that's been as hyped as this..

It was Bioware et al, that were claiming to be so radically different with this MMO.. (and granted with the V/O they've broken a bit of new ground) but they had a lot to live upto in terms of the hyperbole they've churned out over the last (how many?) years?

My original post, was simply an apraisal of the game as I see it at present, afterall my opinions are as valid as anybody gushing about the game? If you don't agree with my opinion that's fine by me that's your prerogative.. what I won't be doing is trying to invalidate your or anybody else's opinion, with strawmen etc like some of the more rabid you tend to find on gaming forums...

Surprised no one has mentioned the companions yet. Adds a whole new element to the game once you leave the starting area and choose your crew skills, sending them off on various tasks and just engaging with them.

Also questing as a group makes a massive difference to the experience.

Having spent some time thinking about my initial levelling 1-10 my biggest issues have been with combat and the interface (sith warrior). For example when I first played Rift I loved how I could modify the UI out of the box and in particular how it notified me of cooldowns. By the time I hit level 10 I felt I was constantly watching the action bar rather than the fight itself. Get that sorted with the ability to add some basic macro's and it will be much improved.

Not sure what the non Force class users get around level 9-10 but sweet mother the feeling when you get your first lightsaber is awesome. Then shortly after you
get 2!!!!

Overall I'm really enjoying it, probably because I just love Star Wars. It's early days and it will get better throughout 2012. Was never going back to Wow or Rift so this will suit me nicely (until something better comes along :))

Me and my guild have been really enjoying it, the flashpoints are fun and have great story, it's not by any means reinventing the wheel, it is base very similar to wow (not that I like that) but it's the first MMO that I have played at launch that worked...still in shocked as I've payed for MMOs less complete than this.

If you want a active Sith PVP guild send me a message through trust, we are playing on the Shii Cho east server as Republic for the purpose of the Beta not to reveal Sith stories lines.

I had loads of fun. That's the main point for me. Graphics could be optimized but for beta it's on the right track. I like mmo's and this model played wow since vanilla and I am happy to say from a lover of kotor, tor has my next monthly subscription mmo sorry wow but it's been fun.

Not to mentioned the amount of content that is already in the game before release.

And I agree it doesn't re invent the wheel, but what it does it does well.
