The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim announced

probably lacking the required skill needed to upgrade your weapon. You should be getting a message when you press e. It should be at the top left of the screen.

Sorry, yes that's correct but I'm talking about selecting smithing perks from the skills screen, not actually trying to improve weapons.

I'm imperial class. Will that make a difference?

Just went to enchant mine but there was nothing available to select on the 'enchating' slot :\

First you need to learn the enchanting attribute by disenchanting an item, which will destroy it in the precess. Only after this you would be able to use this enchantment to upgrade your items. There are some items that cannot be disenchanted though.

there are no perks in smithing. Just make sure you do not waste your skill points there to unlock any of the light armour, unless of course you intend to use that type. I would suggest you use heavy armour as it provides extra damage protection and when you get the heavy armour condition perk it weighs 0.

Think I'm just going to cheat and manually add the first level perk via the console. it surely must be glitched as the first level perks don't have any requirements (other than a free perk obviously)

Am I getting perks and skills mixed up or something?

Either way, I can't unlock steel smithing from here. See pic:

^^^^ Sorry there are no perks you can upgrade in smithing is what i was meant to say (like 0/5, 1/5, 2/5 etc)

Not 100% sure but i think you need to level up and assign that level point to Steel Smithing. I think you can select it because you do not have any skill points left.... or on a second thought, most likely you already have this active. Just go to blacksmith forge and see if you have steel smithing as an option.

Just don't think of them as perks. Think of them as skill points and the skill trees (the constellations).

Every time you level you gain a skill point to spend on a skill tree right away or to save and use later.

Now your problem is one of two things:

1. According to that screenshot you have already got the steel smithing perk as it's bright gold in colour.

You should have the Steel option available when you use the anvil to create items.

or

2. According to that screenshot you don't have a skill point to spend so that is why you cannot select it.

I put the 2nd answer as I'm not 100% sure that the gold glow means you have got the perk or not (I haven't played skyrim since Friday).

I need help. I'm struggling...

..to pull myself away from this game, it's keeping me up till silly o'clock in the morning. It's too addictive :( :p

Just played the game again after it was updated to 1.2. What have they done? Regularly crashes now, and I've had the backwards flying dragons (which are also really jittery too), invisible soldiers and lots of crashes to desktop (well, I assume it crashes - it just quits suddenly, no error message or anything).

Odd things like weapon grinding wheel noises when there is nobody there etc.

Had the occasional crash and blue/textureless items before, but with 90+ hours under my belt not had many problems - until now. :(

I'm getting some weird keyboard thing since the update where key input just stops for a couple of seconds then all the commands I entered are executed at once. The mouse works fine throughout. I have to quit and reload to get around it. Very annoying.

You can find a Blacksmith's Philter in that dungeon in Understone Keep in Markarth. It's in the first cavey bit where the spiders are, resting on top of a pillar in the room where you start out at the top with ramps going down. I waited a while (around 3 in-game days) before going into the Dwemer ruin section of that dungeon, and all the spiders and loot (including that potion) respawned.

Thanks! it was where you said :).
