Anyone think The Beatles are overrated?

"All your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade"

Interpretation
Noel likes lemonade, especially strawberry flavour.
Noel also likes eating cheese before bed.

Well actually drug related and likely how Noel's ex-gf saved his life during his drug taking days, so makes sense in context.

I find the Beetles boring and in fact have developed a hatred for them. I live in Liverpool, and it seems like Liverpool as a city is completely obsessed with the Beetles and refused to get over them, so I often see or hear references to them as if they were in their prime or something.

It gets boring, even more so when I can't/don't understand the huge fuss that's made over them especially in the case of Liverpool as a city where it's had a load of other things to go on about as much yet they still go on about the Beetles (I'm talking about things like South Parkway train station where there's a bush out side it that is shaped like the Beetles, or John Lennon airport to name some).

I'm surprised I haven't been properly lynched yet for my comments about Liverpool, but I'm interested to know what else the place has going on?

"Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come
Corporation teeshirt, stupid b100dy Tuesday
Man you been a naughty boy. You let your face grow long
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob"

And what do you make of these lyrics?

Nonsensical crap. Braver and more innovative than anything Oasis have done though. At least with Oasis their nonsense lyrics still manage to stay within a logical comfort zone.

'slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball'
'stops at traffic lights, but only when their green'

Not sure what your irrational hatred of a city has to do with the price of bread let alone wether or not the Beatles are any good they could have crawled out of the pits of hell covered in all the filth of humanity and there music would still have blown peoples minds.

I was replying to kylew. What would be rational hatred?

Which perfectly sums up why music isn't just about notes and lyrics, it's all about time, setting, audience and a billion other un tangible factors. I bet if you look at the favourite tracks and albums of most of the posters here very few were picked for there musical excellence or lyrical genius they will mostly be the songs we fell in love with at a certain time in life and that we will cling to forever despite eventually realising they are pretty worthless musically. Unless of course you were one of the lucky few who's 'moment' happened to conincide with a brilliant album or two.

Thanks for elaborating on the exact point I was making. OP says Oasis lyrics are better than Beatles. They're not, and you've summarized why quite brilliantly.

How can anyone say the Beatles are not as good as Oasis? They spawned a huge number of bands, helped British musice to break into the US and are one of the most covered artists in the world.

Now, Oasis, a band that has openly stated to be influenced by The Beatles, do. This is purely down to lyrical content. For me they have better lyrics. They make much more sense, tell better stories with their songs and they relate to me more.

?

I feel sorry for you

Most of the Oasis lyrics are direct lifts from Beatles songs.

Have you actually listened to Sgt Pepper? Abby Road

Or are you basing this awful drivel becasue you have listen to the Red Album?

I grew up with The Beatles because my Dad was a massive fan but I prefer their early stuff than the overrated crap that was The White Album and Sgt Pepper (my opinion).

Laughable tbh.

Sgt Pepper made on a 4 track with sound imagery of Lucy/Kite, The Haunting Day in the life, Beautiful syncopation of Good morning Good morning....

I could go on...

Oh I will

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey- No one riffs like this

While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Glass onion
Dear Prudence

All great tracks in their own right.

Hang on a minute, you equate the Beatles (one of the most influential bands ever) to Jls ???

as far as a screaming fan base goes, yes. no one has ever recreated beatle mania. the beatles were like good little sunday school children when it came to their persona's in the early days, like jls. oasis were the bad lads.

i'm not suggesting that one can compare a jls song to a beatles song but times have changed and jls are a modern day example of a band put togethor like the beatles. don't forget, the beatles were managed into an image, the suits weren't a natural choice. they also sacked a perfectly good drummer on the grounds of image. oasis sacked theirs on the grounds of ability, yet he drummed on their best album, one could even go as far to say that he made that album with his drumming technique.

You really need to do some research before posting this nonsense...I'm a Beatles expert and will gladly rip your posts apart when they are just untrue.

instead of putting 'BS post' why don't you enlighten me? i'm no beatles expert but it's common knowledge that the beatles did drugs, shock horror! it was the 60's but compared to the gallagher brothers, they were pretty clean cut.
pete best did not fit with the beatles image, he was too good looking, this has been clarified plenty of times, that's why management got shut of him. that's called putting a band togethor. they may have met off their own accord but they were styled and packaged.
how is my post on mcarroll's technique a bs post?

They didnt get rid of Best based on looks.

I have given you the facts.

George Martin said Best had to go....Do you know who George Martin is?

Who is this managment you speak of?

mcarroll's Drumming ruins that Album....One of the Reasons why I can't listen to it.

yes i know who george martin is, just like i know who brian epstein is.

ringo starr's drumming isn't great, wasn't it lennon who said that ringo starr is the best drummer .... in the beatles? best just didn't fit with the vision of the beatles from a management perspective and didn't gel with the others.

you can't listen to definitely maybe because of the drumming? right. ok.

They're not overrated, and their music is still wonderful to this day. For anyone interested in the content of the songs lyrically, how they were put together in the studio, and the astounding lengths George Martin went to to make the songs what they are I recommend the book 'Revolution in the Head'.

If anyone still doubts their brilliance check out the Love album put together by Martin and his son, which they created using the original recordings to create a (roughly) 90 minute medley of songs to accompany the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name. For anyone even remotely familiar with their work it's amazing to hear the songs you know and love cut up and stitched backed together so masterfully. I've seen the show twice and it's mind-blowing.

As for Oasis lyrics, and even as a fan, I can't make head nor tail of half of them. Same goes for a lot of Beatles tracks (though the above book recommendation helps a lot). But then some of the greatest songs ever have either nonsense lyrics or lyrics that don't seem to mean anything at a glance.

This thread is getting better and better.

A lot of fanboys out there still ;-)

weather you like the Beatles or not how can you even say they are overrated!
